She is best known for her 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, which was the first feature film directed by an African-American woman to receive a general theatrical release in the United States. Dash has also directed television films and series, including The Rosa Parks Story, Funny Valentines, and Love Song. She has written several books, including the novel Daughters of the Dust and the memoir Through the African American Lens. Dash is a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and has received numerous awards and honors for her work.
