Critics Consensus

“A Thousand and One” is a cinematic masterpiece that delves into the complexities of motherhood, gentrification, and the human spirit. Director Rockwell’s auspicious debut is brought to life by the incredible performances of the cast, particularly Teyana Taylor, who delivers a passionate and palpable portrayal of a mother fighting to reclaim her son and her home. The film’s humanistic epic quality is a testament to Rockwell’s empathy and subtle shadings, making it feel like a filmed novel. While some critics may find fault with the premise, “A Thousand and One” is a moving and sincere story that will leave audiences in awe.

Audience Consensus

“A Thousand and One” is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and want to hug your loved ones. Teyana Taylor’s performance is nothing short of amazing, and the story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. It’s a must-see for anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in the world, and for anyone who loves a good underdog story. Plus, it’s set in New York City, so you know it’s going to be good. Don’t miss out on this one!

Critics Consensus

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a cinematic masterpiece that transcends the superhero genre and delivers a poignant and emotional story that will leave audiences in tears. James Gunn’s direction is impeccable, balancing humor and heart with ease, and completing Rocket’s transformation into one of Marvel’s greatest characters. While some may find the first 90 minutes to be a bit of a slog, the real energy kicks in and the film takes off into the stratosphere. The soundtrack is perfectly curated, enhancing the already stunning visuals and adding to the emotional weight of the story. This film is a fitting farewell to the Guardians and to James Gunn, who has left an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Audience Consensus

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the perfect mix of heart, humor, and action. James Gunn really outdid himself with this one, giving Rocket the spotlight he deserves and completing his transformation into one of Marvel’s greatest characters. Sure, the first 90 minutes can be a bit of a slog, but once the real energy kicks in, you’ll be on the edge of your seat. And let’s not forget about the awesome soundtrack that perfectly complements the film’s epic moments. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a tearfully moving and bonkers hilarious conclusion to the trilogy that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

Critics Consensus

Sisu, the Finnish action film that has been making waves in the cinema world, is a blood-soaked, adrenaline-fueled ride that will leave you breathless. Director Jalmari Helander has crafted a film that is equal parts Sergio Leone and Quentin Tarantino, with a healthy dose of Finnish humor thrown in for good measure. The story follows The Immortal, a legendary ex-commando who takes on a group of Nazis in a battle that is as brutal as it is satisfying. The action is non-stop, the violence is over-the-top, and the humor is pitch-black. Sisu is a film that will leave you feeling both exhilarated and slightly disturbed, and that’s exactly what makes it so damn good.

Audience Consensus

Sisu is the ultimate Nazi-killing movie that will have you cheering for the good guys and cringing at the brutal violence. It’s like a Quentin Tarantino film on steroids, with non-stop action and gore that will leave you breathless. The Finnish director Jalmari Helander has created a masterpiece that will satisfy any action movie fan’s thirst for blood and guts. The Immortal is a badass hero that you can’t help but root for, and the Nazis are the perfect villains to hate. If you’re looking for a fun, over-the-top, and entertaining movie, Sisu is the one for you. Just don’t forget to bring a strong stomach and a love for explosions.

Movie Info

Storyline

In 1969, bankrupt pizzeria owner Richard Davis invented the modern-day bulletproof vest. To prove that it worked, he shot himself — point blank — 192 times. Davis then launched Second Chance, which became one of the largest body armor companies in the world. Charming and brash, he directed sensational marketing films, earning him celebrity status among police and gun owners across the country. But the death of a police officer wearing a Second Chance vest catalyzes Davis’ fall, revealing a man full of contradictions cultivated over decades of reckless lies. Equally as questionable as he was captivating, Davis saved thousands of lives while endangering exponentially more.

The production feeds both the intellectual and emotional appetites of those who appreciate intimate motion picture experiences and that seems almost as foreign in today’s American cinematic climate as the language spoken by the characters.

Critics Consensus

Although She Said struggles to add cinematic flair to its fact-based story, it remains a worthy, well-acted tribute to journalistic integrity.

Audience Consensus

She Said may not be the most thrilling movie out there, but it’s still a pretty solid nod to the importance of good journalism. The acting is top-notch, and you can tell the filmmakers really wanted to do justice to the true story behind it all. Sure, it might not be the most cinematic thing you’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re into that kind of thing. Plus, who doesn’t love a good tribute to journalistic integrity?

Trivia

Goofs / Tidbits
The film starts off by showing a young woman walking along a beach in Ireland in Ireland in 1992 and seeing a film shoot taking place, indicating that Harvey Weinstein was involved in a film in production in Ireland in 1992. The film appears to be a historical piece as there are actors in period costumes. The name of this film is never stated but no period drama involving Weinstein appears to have been shot in Ireland in 1992. The nearest that can be found that fits the parameters are ‘Into the West’ (1992), which has some beach scenes but was actually filmed in 1991. Weinstein did oversee one costume drama that was filmed in 1992, The Hour of the Pig (1993) but that was filmed in France & England, not Ireland.

Critics Consensus

Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a visually stunning and erotically charged film that manages to capture the essence of the novel while also adding its own unique flair. The lush costumes and moody score create a rich atmosphere that draws the viewer in, while the talented ensemble cast delivers solid performances. However, the film does struggle at times to capture Lawrence’s modernist vision, and the pacing can feel rushed. Overall, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a worthy addition to the canon of erotic cinema, and a reminder of the power of on-screen passion.

Audience Consensus

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a steamy and sensual adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s classic novel. The film is a feast for the eyes, with gorgeous costumes and lush scenery that transport you to another time and place. The chemistry between the two leads is electric, and their love story is both passionate and poignant. While the film may not capture all of Lawrence’s modernist vision, it certainly captures the spirit of his work and reminds us that eroticism on screen is something to be celebrated. So grab some popcorn and a glass of wine, and get ready for a wild ride with Lady Chatterley and her lover.

Taken on its own terms, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” is an estimable adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s scandalous 1928 novel. But those terms are strange and certainly not what you’d expect.

An unabashedly heady romance, rich in pretty costumes — when they’re wearing them — and lush, lusty atmosphere.

As the infidelity plot barrels toward its reckoning with class prejudice, and the moody, thumping cello returns to Isabella Summers’ strings-centered score, Corrin’s vibrant performance keeps us engaged.

Cinema has been deprived of eroticism recently, on-screen sex has become a depressing rarity, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover is restorative.

However faithfully the film transposes the plot and themes of the source material, it struggles to capture the spirit, ironing out D.H. Lawrence’s modernity-skeptical modernism and losing sight of his poetic vision.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover features some solid performances from its ensemble cast, yet never scales the peaks of previous efforts. In many ways the film is more concerned with intellectual fulfilment, than passionate pursuits.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a fascinating look at sex as something to be celebrated rather than shunned, but unfortunately, the film is too uneven for its own good.

The film is a romantic, enthralling adaptation that boasts wonderful performances & an eroticism that has been missing from the romance genre lately.  October 22, 2022 | Rating: 4/5

There have certainly been worse adaptations. And none that have been quite so lovely to look at. At least until the next one.

It’s all so hurried, you’d think it’d at least be engaging, but shorn of Lawrence’s vibrant prose, there’s remarkably little to engage with in what is, otherwise, a fairly banal story.
