DEVOTION

As an intellectual dismantling of white savior narratives, “Devotion” is smartly done; as an enjoyable heartwarmer to watch with your uncle, it’s stiff when it should soar.

It’s committed to the hallmarks of the genre, for better and for worse.

If “they don’t make ’em like they used to” is a thing you say about movies, “Devotion” is for you.

An oddly dull and dutiful biopic, too restrained to serve the valiant efforts of its leads.

“Do you know how tired I am of people trying to help me while looking down on me?” Brown asks in one devastating scene. He’s speaking to Hudner, but the line lands a direct hit against every white-saviour movie that came before it.

A stirring story of friendship during war, and beyond, that is both rare and real.

You could certainly find more exciting and action-packed movies in theaters right now, but Devotion has something many films don’t: patience, humanity, and more than little humility.

Majors once again shows why he is quickly becoming one of this generation’s most fascinating actors.

Majors winds a surprising path towards enlightening this man and what must have been his daily struggle, choosing to snarl and obscure just a little more than a lesser actor, a lesser film, would feel necessary

Devotion is a relatively low-key, thoughtful examination of loyalty and duty, both as a member of the military and as an overall person.

The script so flattens out the trials of Brown and the “Devotion” of these two for one another that we find ourselves thinking, “Well, I guess we have to take their word for it.”
