Robert D. San Souci (1946-2014) was an American author of children’s books, best known for his retellings of traditional folktales and fairy tales from around the world. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in a large family of storytellers. He studied folklore and mythology at the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to write over 100 books for children, including The Talking Eggs, The Legend of Scarface, and The Hired Hand. San Souci was a recipient of numerous awards for his work, including the Caldecott Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 68.
