Ousmane Sembene was a Senegalese writer and filmmaker who is considered one of the most important African filmmakers of the 20th century. He was born on January 1, 1923, in Ziguinchor, Senegal, and grew up in a rural village. Sembene worked as a fisherman, bricklayer, and soldier before becoming a writer. He wrote several novels, including “God’s Bits of Wood” and “Xala,” which explored themes of colonialism, African identity, and social injustice. In the 1960s, Sembene turned to filmmaking and directed several acclaimed films, including “Black Girl,” “Mandabi,” and “Camp de Thiaroye.” He died on June 9, 2007, in Dakar, Senegal.
