Joseph Stein was an American playwright and librettist, best known for his work on the musicals Fiddler on the Roof and Zorba. He was born on May 30, 1912, in New York City and passed away on October 24, 2010, in Manhattan. Stein wrote over 30 plays and musicals throughout his career, including Mr. Wonderful, Take Me Along, and Rags. He was a recipient of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical. Stein was also a member of the Dramatists Guild Council and served as its president from 1981 to 1985.
