John W. Campbell Jr. (1910-1971) was an American science fiction writer and editor. He is best known for his work as the editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, where he helped to shape the Golden Age of Science Fiction. As a writer, he published numerous short stories and novels, including the influential novella “Who Goes There?” which was adapted into the classic horror film “The Thing” in 1951. Campbell was also a proponent of pseudoscientific theories such as dianetics, which later evolved into the Church of Scientology.
