Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was a British author and illustrator best known for his children’s book series, “Doctor Dolittle.” He studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as a civil engineer before serving in World War I. During the war, he wrote letters to his children, which included stories about a doctor who could talk to animals. These letters eventually became the basis for his first book, “The Story of Doctor Dolittle,” which was published in 1920. Lofting went on to write 12 more books in the series, which have been translated into multiple languages and adapted into films and stage productions.
