Donald Ogden Stewart (1894-1980) was an American author, playwright, and screenwriter. He is best known for his work on the screenplay for the classic film “The Philadelphia Story” (1940), for which he won an Academy Award. Stewart also wrote several novels and plays, including “A Partridge in a Pear Tree” (1952) and “The Guardsman” (1924). He was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of writers and intellectuals who met regularly in New York City in the 1920s. Stewart was also a political activist and served as a member of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League during World War II.
