    Aleksey German was a Russian film director and screenwriter known for his unique style and uncompromising approach to filmmaking. He was born in 1938 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and began his career as a film critic before transitioning to directing in the 1960s. German’s films often explored the complexities of Soviet society and history, and were marked by their long takes, intricate sound design, and dense, layered narratives. Some of his most notable works include “Trial on the Road” (1971), “My Friend Ivan Lapshin” (1984), and “Hard to Be a God” (2013). German passed away in 2013 at the age of 74.
