Robert Aldrich was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He was known for his uncompromising approach to filmmaking, often tackling controversial and challenging subject matter. He directed such classic films as The Dirty Dozen, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, and The Longest Yard. He was nominated for two Academy Awards and won the Golden Globe for Best Director for The Flight of the Phoenix. He was also the first recipient of the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
