He is best known for writing the screenplay for The Fisher King, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, as well as for writing and directing the films The Ref, A Little Princess, and Freedom Writers. He has also written the screenplays for several other films, including The Bridges of Madison County, The Horse Whisperer, and P.S. I Love You. LaGravenese has also produced several films, including The Last Five Years, Beautiful Creatures, and The Big Wedding.
