Sweeney began her career as an assistant editor on the film Blue Velvet in 1986. She went on to edit several films, including Wild at Heart, The Grifters, and The Silence of the Lambs. In 1995, she made her directorial debut with the film Unstrung Heroes. She has since produced and edited several films, including The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive. Sweeney has been nominated for several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Film Editing for The Straight Story.
