    Howard Hawks (1896-1977) was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He was a major figure in the Hollywood studio system, directing some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his comedies, such as Bringing Up Baby (1938), His Girl Friday (1940), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), as well as his westerns, such as Red River (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959). He was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won an honorary Oscar in 1975.
