Frank Capra (1897-1991) was an Italian-American film director, producer, and writer. He is best known for directing such classic films as It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). He won three Academy Awards for Best Director and was nominated for six more. He was also the recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1938. Capra’s films are known for their optimism, and his influence on American cinema is still felt today.
