Critics Consensus

Thrillingly unrestrained yet solidly crafted, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood tempers Tarantino’s provocative impulses with the clarity of a mature filmmaker’s vision

Audience Consensus

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is like a time machine that takes you back to the groovy 60s, complete with hippies, movie stars, and a killer soundtrack. Tarantino’s love for cinema is evident in every frame, and the performances from DiCaprio, Pitt, and Robbie are top-notch. Plus, who doesn’t love a good alternate history twist? It’s a wild ride that’s both hilarious and heartwarming, and it’s definitely worth the watch. Just be prepared for some fantastically ill-disciplined and indulgent moments, but hey, that’s Tarantino for you.

ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD

If there’s something potentially dangerous or reactionary about Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’s nostalgia for a bygone era and its trickle-down frontier heroism, it’s a tension that Tarantino plays with thoughtfully…

Like most of Tarantino’s work, Once Upon A Time in… Hollywood is eliciting very strong emotions on both sides of the spectrum.

I love this movie… When [director Quentin Tarantino] pulls the ripcord and it goes bananas, it is just so much fun.

You can feel the love of cinema in it, but I thought it was fantastically ill-disciplined and indulgent and whole blocks of “DVD extras.”

[Tarantino’s] most personal film, it is also the one he has hinted may be his last. If so, he will have quit while he’s ahead.

This is a film set in a stunningly evoked Hollywood past. It can also be read as a commentary on Hollywood present.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Tarantino at his most human and mature; much like Jackie Brown, he relies less on referential material and more on exploring rich, fully developed characters who seem to live and breathe.

Gloriously grimy, its a masterpiece of nostalgia, allowing (Quentin Tarantino’s) audience to inhabit a world of low-lives and cults.

Overall, it’s a good film with superlative acting performances that’s well made and creates an authentic, immersive atmosphere of an idolized, nostalgic 1969 Los Angeles.

It might be closing time in Tarantino’s Hollywood, but he just wants to make sure we leave the lights on. If Hollywood gives studios the reassurance that movies like this still matter, maybe they’ll still glow.
