During his long stretch in prison, Dufresne comes to be admired by the other inmates -- including an older prisoner named Red -- for his integrity and unquenchable sense of hope.

The Shawshank Redemption parents' guide: ages 14+

Parents need to know that this acclaimed prison drama is mature and at times brutal, but it is ultimately a hopeful story about friendship, dignity, and perseverance.

  • Violence & scariness: Strong — Prison brutality: severe beatings, an inmate is clubbed to death, a shooting, and a suicide. An off-screen sexual-assault threat recurs and is disturbing though not graphically shown.
  • Sex, romance & nudity: Some — References to prison sexual assault, handled without explicit nudity; a pin-up poster is a plot element.
  • Language: Strong — Frequent strong profanity and racial slurs from inmates and guards.
  • Drinking, drugs & smoking: Moderate — Regular cigarette smoking (cigarettes serve as prison currency) and drinking of beer and smuggled alcohol.
  • Products & purchases: None
