Ross McElwee is an American documentary filmmaker known for his autobiographical films. He was born on July 21, 1947, in Charlotte, North Carolina. McElwee studied filmmaking at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has directed several acclaimed documentaries, including “Sherman’s March” (1986), “Bright Leaves” (2003), and “Photographic Memory” (2011). His films often explore themes of memory, family, and personal identity. McElwee has received numerous awards for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Fellowship.
