    Bio:

    Melvin Van Peebles is an American filmmaker, actor, and writer known for his contributions to the Black cinema movement of the 1970s. He is best known for his film “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” (1971), which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. Van Peebles was born on August 21, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, and began his career as a writer and performer in the 1950s. He went on to direct several other films, including “Watermelon Man” (1970) and “Don’t Play Us Cheap” (1972). Van Peebles has also written several books and plays and has been recognized for his contributions to the arts with numerous awards and honors.
