Kinji Fukasaku was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born on July 3, 1930, in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan, and died on January 12, 2003, in Tokyo, Japan. Fukasaku is best known for his work on the Japanese crime film, “Battle Royale” (2000), which became a cult classic. He directed over 60 films throughout his career, including the yakuza film series “Battles Without Honor and Humanity” (1973-1974) and the science fiction film “Virus” (1980). Fukasaku was also a mentor to many Japanese filmmakers, including Takeshi Kitano.
