Bio:
Penelope Gilliatt was a British novelist, playwright, and film critic. She was born in London in 1932 and attended Oxford University. She began her career as a film critic for the Observer in 1960, and wrote for the New Yorker from 1968 to 1993. She was known for her witty and insightful reviews, and was the first woman to be a full-time film critic for a major publication. She wrote several novels and plays, and was nominated for an Academy Award for her screenplay for Sunday Bloody Sunday. She died in 1993.
