Jonas Mekas (1922-2019) was a Lithuanian-American filmmaker, poet, and critic. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential figures in avant-garde cinema. He was a major proponent of the American independent film movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and was the founder of the influential magazine Film Culture. He was also a prolific diarist, and his writings and diaries have been published in several books. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1998.
