Gilbert Adair (1944-2011) was a Scottish novelist, poet, journalist, and film critic. He was best known for his novel The Dreamers, which was adapted into a 2003 film. Adair was a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Independent, and Sight & Sound, and was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995. He was also a member of the British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound magazine’s international critics’ poll. Adair was a passionate advocate for the art of cinema, and his reviews and essays were always insightful and thought-provoking.
