He is best known for his work in the British independent film scene, directing films such as Radio On and The Cardinal and the Corpse. He has also written several novels, including The Passenger and Robinson. He is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound magazine and has written for publications such as The Guardian, The Independent, and The Times. He is also a professor of film at the University of Westminster.
