Charlotta Bass (1874-1969) was an American newspaper editor, publisher, and civil rights activist. She was the first African American woman to own and operate a newspaper in the United States, the California Eagle. She was also the first African American woman to run for Vice President of the United States, as a candidate for the Progressive Party in 1952. As a film critic, she wrote for the Eagle and other publications, and was an outspoken critic of Hollywood’s depiction of African Americans.
