He is best known for his work in the film score for the 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, for which he won a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. He has also composed music for films such as The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, and The Revenant. He has released numerous solo albums and collaborated with other artists, including David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, and David Byrne. He has also won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and a Golden Globe Award.
