Mahalia Jackson was an American gospel singer and civil rights activist. She was one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and was dubbed “The Queen of Gospel”. She was a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement, and her rendition of “We Shall Overcome” is credited with inspiring the crowd at the 1963 March on Washington. Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
