Jean Arthur (1900-1991) was an American actress who starred in a number of classic films in the 1930s and 1940s. She was known for her strong, independent characters and her unique, husky voice. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). She also starred in films such as The More the Merrier (1943), The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), and The Talk of the Town (1942). She retired from acting in the 1950s and died in 1991.
