Clifton James was an American actor best known for his roles as Sheriff J.W. Pepper in the James Bond films Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun. He was born in Spokane, Washington in 1920 and served in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he began his acting career in the 1950s, appearing in films such as Cool Hand Luke and Silver Streak. He also had a successful career on television, appearing in shows such as Gunsmoke, The Rockford Files, and The A-Team. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 96.
