Earl Hamner Jr. was an American television writer and producer, best known for creating the popular family drama series, The Waltons. He was born on July 10, 1923, in Virginia, and grew up in a large family that served as the inspiration for The Waltons. Hamner began his career as a writer in the 1950s, working on various television shows and films. He went on to create The Waltons in 1971, which ran for nine seasons and won multiple awards. Hamner also wrote several novels and memoirs, including Spencer’s Mountain, which was adapted into a film starring Henry Fonda. He passed away on March 24, 2016, at the age of 92.
