Critics Consensus

Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher are worthy adversaries in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, with Miloš Forman’s more grounded and morally ambiguous approach to Ken Kesey’s surrealistic novel yielding a film of outsized power.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’ll make you feel like you’re not quite sure what’s real and what’s not, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the one for you. Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher go head-to-head in this flick, and it’s a battle for the ages. Director Miloš Forman takes Ken Kesey’s trippy book and brings it down to earth a bit, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less powerful. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering who’s really in charge and what’s going to happen next. It’s a wild ride, but it’s definitely worth it.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest ultimately fails as black humor because it is too real for anyone who wants to think about it not to realize what is causing the laughter. Sick persons are not funny. And McMurphy may be the sickest of them all.

Kesey’s story was hardly designed to be naturalistic, and Forman’s streamlining isn’t the way to make it work (there may not be any way). As it stands, Forman has merely reduced the story without successfully revising it.

Critics Consensus

As bruised and cynical as the decade that produced it, this noir classic benefits from Robert Towne’s brilliant screenplay, director Roman Polanski’s steady hand, and wonderful performances from Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

Audience Consensus

This flick is as beat up and jaded as the era it came from, but damn if it ain’t a classic. You got Robert Towne’s killer script, Roman Polanski’s slick direction, and Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway bringing their A-game. It’s like a dark and twisted love letter to LA, with all the corruption and deceit you could ask for. Trust me, you won’t regret giving this one a watch.

Storyline

In 1937 Los Angeles, private investigator Jake ‘J.J.’ Gittes specializes in cheating-spouse cases. His current target is Hollis Mulwray, high-profile chief engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, whose wife suspects him of infidelity. In following Mulwray, Gittes witnesses some usual business dealings, such as a public meeting for construction of a new dam to create additional water supply for Los Angeles, as fresh water is vital to the growing community during the chronic drought; Mulwray opposes the dam. Eventually Gittes sees Mulwray meeting with an unknown young woman who isn’t his wife. Once news of the supposed tryst between Mulwray and this woman hits the media, additional information comes to light that makes Gittes believe that Mulwray is being framed for something and that he himself is being set up. In his investigation of the issue behind Mulwray’s framing and his own setup, Gittes is assisted by Mulwray’s wife Evelyn, but he thinks she isn’t being forthright with him. The further he gets into the investigation, the more secrets he uncovers about the Mulwrays’ professional and personal dealings, including Mulwray’s former business-partnership with Evelyn’s father, Noah Cross. The identity of the unknown woman may be the key to uncovering the whole story.

Critics Consensus

Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and director George Roy Hill prove that charm, humor, and a few slick twists can add up to a great film.

Audience Consensus

When you’ve got Paul Newman and Robert Redford on screen together, you know you’re in for a good time. And “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” doesn’t disappoint. Director George Roy Hill brings the perfect mix of charm, humor, and unexpected turns to this classic Western.

Newman and Redford play off each other so well, it’s like they were born to be on screen together. And the way they pull off those slick heists? It’s almost too cool for words. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of laughs to balance out the action.

Sure, it’s a bit of an oldie, but “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” still holds up today. So grab some popcorn, kick back, and enjoy the ride. You won’t regret it.

Storyline

Johnny Hooker, a small time grifter, unknowingly steals from Doyle Lonnegan, a big time crime boss, when he pulls a standard street con. Lonnegan demands satisfaction for the insult. After his partner, Luther, is killed, Hooker flees, and seeks the help of Henry Gondorff, one of Luther’s contacts, who is a master of the long con. Hooker wants to use Gondorff’s expertise to take Lonnegan for an enormous sum of money to even the score, since he admits he “doesn’t know enough about killing to kill him.” They devise a complicated scheme and amass a talented group of other con artists who want their share of the reparations. The stakes are high in this game, and our heroes must not only deal with Lonnegan’s murderous tendencies, but also other side players who want a piece of the action. To win, Hooker and Gondorff will need all their skills…and a fair amount of confidence.

Movie Plot & More
Plot

A landmark Sergio Leone spaghetti western masterpiece featuring a classic Morricone score.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’ll make you feel like a cowboy, then Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western is the way to go. It’s a classic, and the music by Morricone is just as iconic as the film itself. You’ll be humming the tunes for days after watching it. Trust me, this movie is a must-see for any fan of the genre.

Storyline

Based on a true story, a group of allied escape artist-type prisoners-of-war are all put in an “escape proof” camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the movie is played for comedy, as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel. The second half is high adventure as they use planes, trains, and boats to get out of occupied Europe.

Gripping, suspenseful, and visually iconic, this late-period Hitchcock classic laid the groundwork for countless action thrillers to follow.

This flick is a total nail-biter! Hitchcock really outdid himself with this one. The suspense is so thick you could cut it with a knife. And let’s talk about those visuals – they’re iconic AF. You can totally see how this movie influenced all those action thrillers that came after it. It’s like the OG of the genre.

Storyline

Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara), a lieutenant in the army, is arrested for the murder of a bartender, Barney Quill. He claims, in his defense, that the victim had raped and beaten up his wife Laura (Lee Remick). Although Laura supports her husband’s story, the local paper has reported that the police surgeon can find no evidence that she has been raped. Manion is defended by Paul Biegler (James Stewart), a humble small-town lawyer and recently deposed district attorney. During the course of interviews, Biegler discovers that Manion is violently possessive and jealous, and also that his wife has a reputation for flirting with other men. Biegler realizes that the prosecution will try to make the court believe that Laura had been drunk and was picked up by the bartender and then her husband killed him and beat her up when he discovered they had been together. Manion pleads “not guilty” and Biegler, who knows that his case is weak, tries to find evidence that will save Manion.

A film that requires and rewards patience in equal measure, Pather Panchali finds director Satyajit Ray delivering a classic with his debut.

If you’re in the mood for a slow burn, Pather Panchali is the flick for you. Satyajit Ray’s first film is a total classic, but don’t expect it to be a wild ride from start to finish. You gotta have some patience, my friend. But trust me, it’s worth it. Ray really knows how to tell a story, and he takes his time doing it. So sit back, relax, and let Pather Panchali work its magic. You won’t regret it.
