Plot
In the Heights centers on a variety of characters living in the neighborhood of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighborhood get a dose of what it means to be home.

Critics Consensus

Led by stellar performances and artfully helmed by writer-director Florian Zeller, The Father presents a devastatingly empathetic portrayal of dementia.

Audience Consensus

The Father is a film that will leave you feeling disoriented, sad, and maybe even a little scared. But don’t worry, Anthony Hopkins is here to guide you through it with his remarkable performance. It’s like King Lear, but even better (according to one critic). The way the film distorts and disorients is both impressive and harrowing, and it’s definitely not a movie you’ll want to watch twice in a row. But if you’re up for a mind-bending, gaslight thriller that will leave you questioning your own perceptions, then The Father is the film for you. Just don’t forget to take a break afterwards.

Storyline

Having just scared off his recent caregiver, Anthony, an ailing, octogenarian Londoner gradually succumbing to dementia, feels abandoned when concerned Anne, his daughter, tells him she’s moving to Paris. Confused and upset, against the backdrop of a warped perspective and his rapid, heart-rending mental decline, Anthony is starting to lose his grip on reality, struggling to navigate the opaque landscape of present and past. Now, as faded memories and glimpses of lucidity trigger sudden mood swings, dear ones, Anthony’s surroundings, and even time itself become distorted. Why has his younger daughter stopped visiting? Who are the strangers that burst in on Anthony?

Another gorgeously animated, skillfully voiced entry in the Disney canon, Raya and the Last Dragon continues the studio’s increased representation while reaffirming that its classic formula is just as reliable as ever.

Raya and the Last Dragon is a visually stunning adventure that takes you on a journey through a world rich with lore and details. The message of putting aside differences and finding common ground is delivered with spectacular visuals and a lively voice cast, led by Awkwafina. Plus, it’s refreshing to see a Disney film with a darker tone and a message that goes beyond just “believe in yourself.” Overall, it’s a fun and exciting film that will leave you wishing you could live in the world of Kumandra.

Honey Boy serves as an act of cinematic therapy for its screenwriter and subject — one whose unique perspective should strike a chord in audiences from all backgrounds.

Audience Consensus

Honey Boy is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but instead of screaming in terror, you’ll be crying your eyes out. It’s a heart-wrenching portrayal of a father-son relationship that will leave you feeling both devastated and hopeful. Shia LaBeouf’s raw and unfiltered voice shines through in this deeply personal film, and the performances from all the actors are nothing short of remarkable. It’s a movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll, and a reminder that sometimes the most painful stories are the ones that need to be told.

Storyline

From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har’el brings to life a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father through cinema and dreams. Fictionalizing his childhood’s ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har’el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Artist and musician FKA Twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope.

Critics Consensus

Collective presents a darkly effective overview of the cycle of political corruption and public cynicism that takes hold when government abrogates its responsibility to the people.

Audience Consensus

Collective is the kind of documentary that will make you want to stand up and fight against corruption, but also make you want to curl up in a ball and cry. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave you feeling both outraged and inspired. The film does an incredible job of shining a light on the failures of the Romanian health system, while also celebrating the power of investigative journalism. It’s a must-watch for anyone who cares about the truth and the people who fight for it. Plus, it’s just really well-made. Highly recommend.
