EO (2022)
RT Audience Score: 93%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Bravely updating Bresson with brilliant results, EO is a donkey-driven drama that’ll stubbornly stick with you long after the credits roll.
If you’re looking for a movie that’s a little off the beaten path, EO might just be the ticket. It’s a donkey-driven drama that takes some cues from the classic Bresson films, but manages to put its own unique spin on things. And let me tell you, it’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
The story follows a stubborn donkey and his equally stubborn owner as they navigate the ups and downs of life in a small village. It’s a slow burn, to be sure, but the payoff is well worth it. By the time the credits roll, you’ll feel like you’ve been on a journey with these characters.
One thing that really sets EO apart is the stunning cinematography. The landscapes are breathtaking, and the way the camera lingers on the donkey’s expressive face is truly something to behold. And the score is hauntingly beautiful, adding to the film’s overall sense of melancholy.
All in all, EO is a movie that’s not afraid to take risks. It’s not your typical Hollywood fare, but that’s what makes it so special. So if you’re in the mood for something a little different, give EO a shot. Who knows, you might just fall in love with that stubborn little donkey.

Plot
An animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet…saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people,” when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising. Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug, Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity.

Dark Waters (2019)
RT Audience Score: 95%
Awards & Nominations: 10 nominations
Dark Waters powerfully relays a real-life tale of infuriating malfeasance, honoring the victims and laying blame squarely at the feet of the perpetrators.
Dark Waters is like a horror movie, but instead of a monster, it’s capitalism that’s the villain. Mark Ruffalo gives a great performance as the hero fighting against a corrupt corporation, and the film does a good job of showing how difficult it can be to do the right thing in a society that values profit over people. It’s not the most uplifting movie, but it’s an important one that will make you think twice about what’s really going on behind the scenes of big businesses. Plus, who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

Riz Ahmed’s performance is a force to be reckoned with, and the film’s portrayal of disabilities as differences rather than handicaps is refreshing. It’s grimly compelling viewing as Marcos gives filmmaker Lauren Greenfield intimate access to her opulent life and oblivious narcissism.

The Kingmaker is a thoroughly entertaining primer on the past, present, and perhaps future of Filipino politics

What’s interesting about the film is that at the center is this ludicrous, ridiculous figure. As the doc scratches away at this, you see grotesque horror, and I thought that was a very astute way of approaching this.

From her very first simper, I was hooked. Some see Imelda as one of the world’s greatest villains. After this tour of her closet, that shoe fits.

A well-researched cautionary tale of what can befall a nation that allows a familial pack of jackals to loot the resources of a struggling, impoverished country.

It’s almost as if [Lauren Greenfield has] been working up to this; it’s a perfectly logical move for her after her last two films.

Even with repeated beats, The Kingmaker still begs to be watched. What it lacks in focus it makes up in personality.

Greenfield is careful to balance the vast shoe collections and showers of banknotes with victim testimony about the notorious period of martial law Imelda’s husband imposed on enemies of the state.

Imelda holds our attention, throughout, even as we marvel at her constitutional inability (or, more likely, unwillingness) to think critically about her misdeeds.

Plot
An extraordinary look into the controversial political career of Imelda Marcos. As the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos is best known for her opulent lifestyle, but it was her behind-the-scenes influence of her husband’s presidency that rocketed her to the global political forefront. A journey through the Marcos family’s long history of corruption, extravagance and brutality, this documentary tells a cautionary tale of a powerful female leader whose questionable sense of reality divided a nation.
