Not One Less (2000)
RT Audience Score: 90%
Awards & Nominations: 17 wins & 6 nominations
Not One Less, directed by the masterful Zhang Yimou, is a stunning example of neorealism and docufiction. The film’s relentlessly small scale is essential to its power, as it tells the story of a young girl’s determination to save her classmate from a life of poverty. Yimou’s direction is complemented by the non-didactic grace of the thematic lesson, which clashes traditional community values with the burgeoning cult of money. The film’s stark depiction of life on the street is both humorous and pathos-filled, and the non-actors’ ability to bring the highly emotional fictional story to life is a testament to Yimou’s mastery of his craft. Not One Less is a small movie with a big impact, and it stands nicely beside Yimou’s other startling showcases for women under siege, such as Ju Dou and Shanghai Triad.
Not One Less is a heartwarming film that will make you laugh, cry, and appreciate the power of community. Zhang Yimou’s direction is masterful, and the non-actors give performances that are so convincing, you’ll forget they’re not professionals. The film’s small scale is what makes it so powerful, and it’s a testament to Yimou’s skill that he can create such a moving story with such simplicity. If you’re looking for a movie that will leave you feeling inspired, Not One Less is the perfect choice.

Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999)
RT Audience Score: 87%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 8 nominations
In “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.”, Errol Morris once again proves his mastery of storytelling by presenting a discomforting tale of a man destroyed by his own ignorance. Leuchter, a technician who was overly impressed with his own expertise and infallibility, becomes a small figure blindly sucked into the vortex of consummate evil. Morris’ subject’s disarming candor and misplaced vanity are both fascinating and tragic, but unfortunately, the film’s didactic turns undercut what could have been Morris’ best work yet. Nonetheless, “Mr. Death” is a thought-provoking and compelling documentary that will leave you questioning the limits of human knowledge and the dangers of unchecked hubris.
If you’re looking for a documentary that will make you feel comfortable, Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. is not it. But if you’re looking for a fascinating and uncomfortable story about a man who was consumed by his own ignorance, then this is the film for you. Morris weaves a compelling narrative that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the death penalty and the people who carry it out. Plus, who doesn’t love a good deluded technician story? It’s like Breaking Bad, but with less meth and more lethal injection.

Gone with the Wind’s epic grandeur and romantic allure encapsulate an era of Hollywood filmmaking — but that can’t excuse a blinkered perspective that stands on the wrong side of history.
Gone With the Wind” is like a big, fancy cake that you know you shouldn’t eat but can’t resist. It’s got everything: romance, drama, war, and Clark Gable’s charming smirk. Sure, it’s not perfect – there’s some subtle racism and it’s a bit too long – but it’s still a classic for a reason. Plus, that shot of the dead soldiers in the street is hauntingly beautiful. If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a watch and see what all the fuss is about.

A brutal, often times funny, other times terrifying portrayal of drug addiction in Edinburgh. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth viewing as a realistic and entertaining reminder of the horrors of drug use.
Trainspotting is a wild ride that will leave you feeling like you just got off a rollercoaster. With its pitch-black humor, brutal recklessness, and frisky energy, this film is a ghoulish hoot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Despite being about aimless addicts, the characters have such strong personalities that they stand out and make you sympathize with them in some ways. But don’t be fooled, Trainspotting also shows the terrifying and surreal lows of withdrawal, as well as the real-life consequences of addiction. So buckle up and get ready for a ride you won’t forget!
