A haunting depiction of a disintegrating family, and a powerful argument on the elusiveness of truth.
Capturing the Friedmans is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, but instead of a train, it’s a family. The documentary is disturbing, fascinating, and haunting all at once. It’s like a reality TV show gone terribly wrong, but with real consequences. You’ll be left wondering how far you would go to protect your family, and how much you can trust your own memories. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves true crime or just wants to be captivated by a story that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

There’s no doubt that the film delivers the emotional equivalent of a kidney punch, but that’s as much a result of the filmmaker’s attitude-better suited to entomological research-as it is to the Friedmans themselves.

Plot
In the late 1980’s, the Friedmans – father and respected computer and music teacher Arnold Friedman, mother and housewife Elaine Friedman, and their three grown sons, David Friedman, Seth Friedman and Jesse Friedman – of Great Neck, Long Island, are seemingly your typical middle class American family. They all admit that the marriage was by no means close to being harmonious – Arnold and Elaine eventually got divorced – but the sons talk of their father, while also not being always there for them, as being a good man. This façade of respectability masks the fact that Arnold was buying and distributing child pornography. Following a sting operation to confirm this fact, the authorities began to investigate Arnold for sexual abuse of the minor-aged male students of his computer classes, which he held in the basement of the family home. Based on interviews with the students, not only was Arnold charged with and ultimately convicted of multiple counts of sodomy and sexual abuse of these boys but so was eighteen year old Jesse, who was mentioned by many as the aggressor of the two in the acts. Arnold admitted that he is a pedophile, but that he did not abuse the boys in his class as charged and convicted. The trial process brought out the dysfunction that previously existed within the family. But the issue of Arnold and Jesse’s guilt of these acts is hotly debated among the family, among the authorities, among the media and among the students of the computer classes.

Kaurismäki delivers another droll comedy full of his trademark humor.
The Man Without a Past is a movie that will leave you feeling content and maybe even a little confused, just like the main character M. But don’t worry, it’s a good kind of confusion. This film is a slow-paced, multilayered story about outcasts in Helsinki, and it’s done with wicked humor and humanity. It’s like a quirky adventure that’s both dour and delightful at the same time. And let’s not forget the rusty railroads and dingy metal canisters that add color and surprise to the struggling Helsinki setting. Overall, it’s a powerful film that will make you think about wiping the slate clean and living in a utopian community of barter and free association.

One of Woody Allen’s early classics, Manhattan combines modern, bittersweet humor and timeless romanticism with unerring grace.
Manhattan is like a love letter to New York City, but instead of gushing about the bright lights and big dreams, Woody Allen focuses on the neurotic, overintellectualized inhabitants. It’s a refreshing take on the city that never sleeps, and the black and white cinematography adds a touch of nostalgia that makes you feel like you’re watching a classic film. Plus, Meryl Streep plays a lesbian before it was cool, so you know it’s ahead of its time. Overall, Manhattan is a must-watch for anyone who loves New York or just wants to see Woody Allen at his best.

Another masterful, compassionate work from Pedro Almodovar.
Talk to Her is a movie that explores the complexities of human relationships and the different forms of love that exist. While some critics found it to be a mature and mysterious masterpiece, others thought it lacked the social context that would have made it more impactful. Personally, I thought it was a unique and thought-provoking depiction of the thin line between love and obsession. Almodovar’s storytelling is both sensuous and joyful, and the characters’ unlikely predicaments make for an entertaining and emotional ride. Overall, Talk to Her is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good mix of comedy and drama.

Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, is a whimsical and charming romantic comedy that has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. Jeunet’s masterful use of signifiers of a caricature France is both maniacal and clever, creating a tone that is modest rather than grandiose. The film scatters its charm like pearls from a broken necklace, all the more adorable because they are not real. It is a tour de force of a bauble, emotionally and aesthetically beautiful, and a celebration of the imagination and people who are dreamers. Through surrealism and utter weirdness, the picture transforms into a surprisingly sentimental celebration of life, offering a determinedly cinematic world that resonates emotionally, reeking of familiarity and nostalgia. Amélie is the perfect blending of pure art with pure heart, constructed in an oddly fascinating, magic realistic world full of color.
Amélie is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get, but you know it’s going to be sweet. This whimsical romantic comedy takes you on a journey through the streets of Paris, where you’ll meet quirky characters and fall in love with the city’s charm. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s attention to detail is impeccable, and his use of color and music will transport you to a magical world. It’s a celebration of imagination and a reminder to never stop dreaming. So grab a croissant, sit back, and let Amélie take you on a delightful adventure.

Plot
Amélie is a story about a girl named Amélie whose childhood was suppressed by her Father’s mistaken concerns of a heart defect. With these concerns Amélie gets hardly any real-life contact with other people. This leads Amélie to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. She later on becomes a young woman and moves to the central part of Paris as a waitress. After finding a lost treasure belonging to the former occupant of her apartment, she decides to return it to him. After seeing his reaction and his new found perspective – she decides to devote her life to the people around her. Such as, her father who is obsessed with his garden-gnome, a failed writer, a hypochondriac, a man who stalks his ex girlfriends, the “ghost,” a suppressed young soul, the love of her life and a man whose bones are as brittle as glass. But after consuming herself with these escapades – she finds out that she is disregarding her own life and damaging her quest for love. Amélie then discovers she must become more aggressive and take a hold of her life and capture the beauty of love she has always dreamed of.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch may very well be the next Rocky Horror midnight movie. It not only knows how to rock, but Hedwig’s story has an emotional poignancy.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is like a rock concert, a drag show, and a therapy session all rolled into one. It’s a wild ride that will leave you feeling empowered and emotional. The music is catchy, the performances are electric, and the story is both hilarious and heart-wrenching. It’s a movie that celebrates individuality and self-expression, and it does so with style and panache. Whether you’re a fan of musicals or not, Hedwig is a must-see for anyone who wants to feel alive.

Band of Outsiders (Bande à part) (1964)
RT Audience Score: 91%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win
Band of Outsiders is a film that exudes charm and lightness on the surface, but beneath lies a morbid and personal exploration of Godard’s feelings for his wife, Karina. The film is a rejection of traditional filmmaking, breaking every rule with Godard’s signature cocky attitude. It’s a snapshot of youth culture in crisis, but also a timeless piece of cinema that remains appealing and underrated. Godard delivers clever ideas one after another, and the result is a quietly poetic and strangely optimistic film that is both refreshing and accessible to all.
If you’re looking for a movie that’s both charming and morbid, then Band of Outsiders is the perfect pick for you. Godard’s film is a rejection of traditions and an embrace of the new, making it a timeless piece of cinema. Plus, it’s a stirring portrait of youth culture in crisis, which is always relatable. And let’s not forget the fact that it’s a documentary of Godard’s affection for Karina, which is both sweet and intriguing. So, grab some popcorn and get ready for a wild ride with this underrated gem.

Plot
Besotted with cheap crime fiction, cinema, and popular culture, bored-to-death English language students Franz and Arthur love to live in a dream world. Indeed, the pair of layabouts fancy themselves to be a gang. But, in the meantime, Franz and Arthur vie for the attention of their romantic classmate Odile, who naively tips them off about a mountain of cash stashed in an unlocked cabinet in Aunt Victoria’s suburban house in Joinville-le-Pont. Of course, the amateur criminals take an immediate interest in wide-eyed Odile’s incidental mention and start to iron out the facts of an audacious robbery, just like in the movies. However, what happens if Arthur’s uncle and all-powerful love stand in the way of the perfect heist?

Bleak and darkly humorous, No Man’s Land vividly illustrates the absurdity of war.
No Man’s Land is a gripping and disturbing film that brilliantly captures the absurdity of war. The acting is so realistic that it feels authentic, and the dialogue is expertly crafted. It’s hard to believe that this is writer-director Danis Tanovic’s first feature fiction film. The situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East makes this film even more relevant today. It’s a strange and disturbing film, but it’s not without a stirringly humanist compassion even at its most outlandish and outrageous. Overall, No Man’s Land is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand the inanity of war.

Plot
A modern Western inspired by the real-life “no man’s land” areas along the Texas-Mexico border. While out on a father-son border patrol, Jackson kills a Mexican immigrant boy. When Jackson’s father tries taking the blame, Jackson flees south on horseback, becoming a gringo “illegal alien” in Mexico. Chased by Texas Rangers and Mexican federales, Jackson journeys across Mexico to seek forgiveness from the dead boy’s father only to fall in love with the land he was taught to hate.

A Hard Day’s Night, despite its age, is still a delight to watch and has proven itself to be a rock-and-roll movie classic.
A Hard Day’s Night is like a time machine that takes you back to the 60s, where you can witness the Beatles at their peak. The movie is a perfect blend of music, humor, and energy that will make you want to dance and sing along. It’s amazing how the film still feels fresh and relevant after all these years. Sometimes reminds one of silent slapstick and sometimes of the Marx brothers. There have been many efforts to recapture the spirit of those old comedies, but Mr. Lester’s is the first I’ve seen that gets beyond self-conscious pastiche.

Plot
A day and a half in the life of the Fab Four leading up to a televised concert gig. The boys seem to be constantly on the run, from their crazed fans and from their manager, who is constantly trying to rein them in. Sir Ringo Starr however is arrested and still isn’t in the studio half an hour before air time. With Sir Paul McCartney’s grandfather available for additional comical relief, the group performs a dozen or so songs.
