Menace II Society (1993)
RT Audience Score: 93%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 4 nominations
Told with grit and verve by the Hughes brothers in their feature debut, Menace II Society is a gangland epic that breathes with authenticity while steeped in style.
Menace II Society is a movie that will make you feel like you need a hug and a stiff drink at the same time. It’s a raw and unflinching look at the realities of life in the inner city, and it doesn’t pull any punches. But despite the bleakness of the subject matter, there’s a certain power to the film that’s hard to deny. The Hughes brothers may not have all the answers, but they’re asking the right questions, and that’s worth something. So if you’re in the mood for a movie that will make you think and feel, Menace II Society is definitely worth checking out. Just maybe don’t watch it on a first date.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet deftly combines horror, sci-fi, and humor in Delicatessen, a morbid comedy set in a visually ravishing futuristic dystopia.
Delicatessen is like a romantic comedy, but with cannibalism and a post-apocalyptic setting. It’s weird, it’s wild, and it’s surprisingly beautiful. The molelike inhabitants, the lentil-men, and the 21st-century gizmos all blend together in a way that’s both hilarious and unsettling. And let’s not forget the achingly sweet love story that ties it all together. It’s a movie that’s hard to describe, but easy to enjoy. Just don’t watch it on an empty stomach.

Centered on a post-apocalyptic society where food is scarce and used as currency. In an apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor. The owner of the eatery also owns the apartment building and is in need of a new maintenance man since the prior one “mysteriously” disappeared. A former clown applies for the job and the butcher’s intent is to have him work for as little as possible. The clown and butcher’s daughter fall in love and she tries to foil her father’s plans by contacting the “troglodytes”, a grain eating sub-group of society who live entirely underground.

The Commitments is a vibrantly funny and blissfully heartfelt ode to the power of music.
The Commitments is a film that will have you tapping your feet and singing along to the soulful tunes of a group of young Dubliners. Director Alan Parker captures the gritty reality of the working-class origins of his characters, while also delivering explosive musical sequences that will leave you wanting more. The cast, though young and inexperienced, bring a poignant believability to their roles. This joyous ’90s musical-drama may have lots of profanity, but it’s downright irresistible and will leave you with a smile on your face long after the credits roll.

Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors is a masterful exploration of morality, existentialism, and the human condition. With a deft hand, Allen weaves together two seemingly disparate storylines, one comedic and one tragic, to create a cohesive and thought-provoking narrative. The film’s examination of the nature of good and evil is both nuanced and unflinching, leaving the audience to grapple with the uncomfortable truth that sometimes, the bad guys do win. Despite its weighty subject matter, Crimes and Misdemeanors is also a testament to Allen’s comedic genius, with witty one-liners and hilarious satire peppered throughout. This film is a true work of art, and a must-see for anyone interested in exploring the complexities of the human experience.
Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but instead of loops and drops, it’s a mix of comedy and drama. It’s like watching two different movies at the same time, but somehow they blend together perfectly. The film explores deep moral questions while still managing to make you laugh out loud. It’s like a philosophical debate with a punchline. And let’s not forget the incredible acting, especially from Martin Landau who brings a level of seriousness to the film that is truly captivating. Overall, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a must-watch for anyone who wants to laugh, cry, and question their own morality all in one sitting.

As a tragedian, Allen is still stuck in some sort of high school classroom, cribbing the form, but never the substance, of vaunted classics.

The structural and stylistic conceit is that when Landau is onscreen, the film is dead serious, even solemn, while Allen’s own appearance onscreen signals hilarious satire and priceless one-liners.

Dramatically, the film seldom fulfils its promise, and its pessimistic ‘moral’ — that good and evil do not always meet with their just deserts — looks contrived and hollow. Intriguing and patchily effective, nevertheless.

Plot
Judah Rosenthal is an ophthalmologist and a pillar of the community who has a big problem: his mistress Dolores Paley has told him that he is to leave his wife and marry her – as he had promised to do – or she will tell everyone of their affair. When he intercepts a letter Dolores has written to his wife Miriam, he is frantic. He confesses all to his shady brother Jack who assures him that he has friends who can take care of her. Meanwhile, filmmaker Cliff Stern is having his own problems. He’s been working on a documentary film for some time but has yet to complete it. He and his wife Wendy have long ago stopped loving one another and are clearly on their way to divorce. He falls in love with Halley Reed who works with a producer, Lester. Cliff soon finds himself making a documentary about Lester and hates every minute of it.

Blindspotting (2018)
RT Audience Score: 87%
Awards & Nominations: NA
As timely as it is overall impactful, Blindspotting blends buddy comedy with seething social commentary, and rises on the strength of Daveed Diggs’ powerful performance.
Blindspotting is the kind of movie that makes you want to stand up and shout “YAS QUEEN” at the screen. It’s bold, electric, and intense, but also funny and thoughtful. The performances by Diggs and Casal are layered and fleet-footed, and the script is full of pungent dialogue and nuanced reflections on race, rent, incarceration, and gentrification. It’s practically 2018: The Movie, but with a fresh and original take on the typical rites-of-passage story. Blindspotting easily breaks the confines of Black and white binaries, and feels authentic thanks to the warm camaraderie between the two leads. It’s a must-see for anyone who wants to engage in discourse about why things are the way they are, and how we can change them.

Rob Reiner’s touching, funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies, and he was ably abetted by the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
When Harry Met Sally is the rom-com that sets the standard for all others. It’s the perfect blend of witty banter, heartwarming moments, and a love story that will make you swoon. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have an undeniable chemistry that makes you root for them from the very beginning. And let’s not forget about that iconic scene in the diner. It’s the perfect movie to watch with your significant other or even just with a tub of ice cream on a Friday night. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
