RT Audience Score: 84%

A well-acted, intensely shot, action filled war epic, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker is thus far the best of the recent dramatizations of the Iraq War.
The Hurt Locker is like a rollercoaster ride, but instead of loops and drops, it’s filled with heart-pumping suspense and intense action. It’s not your typical war movie, as it doesn’t try to push any political agenda, but instead focuses on the soldiers and their experiences. Jeremy Renner delivers a standout performance that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves a good adrenaline rush.

Plot
An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat, behaving as if he’s indifferent to death. Part harrowing immigration tale, part gangster story, this debut by writer/director Cary Fukunaga is sensitive, insightful and deeply authentic.
Sin Nombre is a movie that will make you feel like you’re on a rollercoaster ride, but instead of loops and drops, you’re hit with raw emotions and heart-wrenching scenes. The performances and cinematography are so naturalistic that you’ll forget you’re watching a movie and feel like you’re right there with the characters. Sure, the story may feel a bit anemic at times, but the exotic setting and strong performances more than make up for it. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about the nameless people behind the headlines. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride with Sin Nombre!

Crude, a documentary about the environmental impact of oil exploitation, may not be groundbreaking, but it is a necessary addition to the angry eco-doc subgenre. The film provides a human perspective, showing the human cost of each drop of oil we consume. While the structure may be a little jumbled, the footage and images of the people and terrain affected back up the film’s rhetoric. Director Joe Berlinger’s decision to remain unseen and unheard on camera is a welcome change from many recent documentaries with an activist bent. Overall, Crude is a gripping and powerful documentary that will leave you questioning the true cost of our reliance on oil.
Crude is like a courtroom thriller, but instead of a murderer, the villain is a monstrous oil company. The documentary may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a worthy addition to the angry eco-doc subgenre. It’s a gripping and powerful film that shows the human cost of each drop of oil we consume. The Ecuadorians’ fight continues, and their courage is not to be doubted. Even Trudie Styler emerges with credit for supporting them. So, if you want to learn about the environmental impact of oil exploitation and the human perspective that prevails, Crude is the documentary for you.

Before she becomes Cruella de Vil, teenage Estella has a dream. She wishes to become a fashion designer, having been gifted with talent, innovation, and ambition all in equal measures. But life seems intent on making sure her dreams never come true. Having wound up penniless and orphaned in London at 12, 10 years later Estella runs wild through the city streets with her best friends and partners-in-(petty)-crime, Horace and Jasper, two amateur thieves. The Bourne Ultimatum is an intelligent, finely tuned non-stop thrill ride. Another strong performance from Matt Damon and sharp camerawork from Paul Greengrass make this the finest installment of the Bourne trilogy.
The Bourne Ultimatum is like a rollercoaster ride that you can’t get enough of, even if it makes you a little queasy. Paul Greengrass’s direction and the twitchy editing make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action, and Matt Damon’s portrayal of Bourne is both resourceful and reckless. The hand-to-hand combat scene in Morocco is a standout, but I do wish there was more time spent on the moments between the mayhem. Overall, it’s a thrilling and intense addition to the Bourne Trilogy that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Sicko is the perfect movie to watch if you want to laugh and cry at the same time. It’s amazing to see how other countries can provide universal healthcare for their citizens, yet America still struggles to do the same. While some may criticize Moore for oversimplifying the issue, it’s hard to deny the impact that Sicko has had on the national conversation about healthcare. The filmmaker has the habit … of never going to the root of a problem. The lack of depth and seriousness, the extreme limitations of his conceptions are enormously debilitating.

In Sicko, Michael Moore’s irreverent comedy has become less bleating and more purposeful, perhaps in part because the times we live in have become more desperate.

For the most part, this is a more restrained Moore and the result is another solid documentary that cements Moore’s status as a filmmaker capable of making an audience laugh and think at the same time.

Sicko offers still plenty to get riled up about, but the firebrand ire of Fahrenheit 9/11 seems to have mellowed a little.

While Moore’s sins aren’t nearly as terrible or significant as those of the political system to which he stands opposed, his unabashed tendency to talk down to his audience is symptomatic of our culture of mediocrity.

Stop Smiling…
Plot
Documentary look at health care in the United States as provided by profit-oriented health maintenance organizations (HMOs) compared to free, universal care in Canada, the U.K., and France. Moore contrasts U.S. media reports on Canadian care with the experiences of Canadians in hospitals and clinics there. He interviews patients and doctors in the U.K. about cost, quality, and salaries. He examines why Nixon promoted HMOs in 1971, and why the Clintons’ reform effort failed in the 1990s. He talks to U.S. ex-pats in Paris about French services, and he takes three 9/11 clean-up volunteers, who developed respiratory problems, to Cuba for care. He asks of Americans, “Who are we?”
