Critics Consensus

A well-acted, intensely shot, action filled war epic, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker is thus far the best of the recent dramatizations of the Iraq War.

Audience Consensus

The Hurt Locker is like a rollercoaster ride, but instead of loops and drops, it’s filled with heart-pumping suspense and intense action. It’s not your typical war movie, as it doesn’t try to push any political agenda, but instead focuses on the soldiers and their experiences. Jeremy Renner delivers a standout performance that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves a good adrenaline rush.

Critics Consensus

Part harrowing immigration tale, part gangster story, this debut by writer/director Cary Fukunaga is sensitive, insightful and deeply authentic.

Audience Consensus

Sin Nombre is a movie that will make you feel like you’re on a rollercoaster ride, but instead of loops and drops, you’re hit with raw emotions and heart-wrenching scenes. The performances and cinematography are so naturalistic that you’ll forget you’re watching a movie and feel like you’re right there with the characters. Sure, the story may feel a bit anemic at times, but the exotic setting and strong performances more than make up for it. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about the nameless people behind the headlines. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride with Sin Nombre!

Mickey Rourke gives a performance for the ages in The Wrestler, a richly affecting, heart-wrenching yet ultimately rewarding drama.

Audience Consensus

The Wrestler is a knockout film that packs a punch with its great performances and powerful story. Mickey Rourke delivers a performance that’s both aggressive and vulnerable, making us root for his character’s redemption. Director Darren Aronofsky brings humanity and artistry to the story, making it a gritty and oftentimes humorous look into the life of a tragic man. By the end of the film, even the toughest and most cynical of viewers will find themselves shedding a tear for the battered dignity of Rourke’s character. It’s a film that demands to be seen and will leave you feeling emotionally moved.

Storyline

This is a drama about an aging professional wrestler, decades past his prime, who now barely gets by working small wrestling shows in VFW halls and as a part-time grocery store employee. As he faces health problems that may end his wrestling career for good he attempts to come to terms with his life outside the ring: by working full time at the grocery store, trying to reconcile with the daughter he abandoned in childhood and forming a closer bond with a stripper he has romantic feelings for. He struggles with his new life and an offer of a high-profile rematch with his 1980s arch-nemesis, The Ayatollah, which may be his ticket back to stardom.

A story of personal ruin and while it certainly does echo Mickey’s own life, it wouldn’t be fair to say he is playing himself. Sure, Rourke’s performance must have been informed by his own past, but that is different, as well as peculiarly powerful.

Critics Consensus

Crude, a documentary about the environmental impact of oil exploitation, may not be groundbreaking, but it is a necessary addition to the angry eco-doc subgenre. The film provides a human perspective, showing the human cost of each drop of oil we consume. While the structure may be a little jumbled, the footage and images of the people and terrain affected back up the film’s rhetoric. Director Joe Berlinger’s decision to remain unseen and unheard on camera is a welcome change from many recent documentaries with an activist bent. Overall, Crude is a gripping and powerful documentary that will leave you questioning the true cost of our reliance on oil.

Audience Consensus

Crude is like a courtroom thriller, but instead of a murderer, the villain is a monstrous oil company. The documentary may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a worthy addition to the angry eco-doc subgenre. It’s a gripping and powerful film that shows the human cost of each drop of oil we consume. The Ecuadorians’ fight continues, and their courage is not to be doubted. Even Trudie Styler emerges with credit for supporting them. So, if you want to learn about the environmental impact of oil exploitation and the human perspective that prevails, Crude is the documentary for you.

Plot
Before she becomes Cruella de Vil, teenage Estella has a dream. She wishes to become a fashion designer, having been gifted with talent, innovation, and ambition all in equal measures. But life seems intent on making sure her dreams never come true. Having wound up penniless and orphaned in London at 12, 10 years later Estella runs wild through the city streets with her best friends and partners-in-(petty)-crime, Horace and Jasper, two amateur thieves. When a chance encounter vaults Estella into the world of the young rich and famous, however, she begins to question the existence she’s built for herself in London and wonders whether she might, indeed, be destined for more after all.

An intense, well-crafted thriller, Tell No One is equal parts heart-pounding and heart-wrenching.

Audience Consensus

Tell No One is like a French pastry – it’s intricate, layered, and oh so satisfying. With enough twists and turns to make your head spin, this thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The cinematography is swoon-worthy and the supporting characters are quick-witted and charming. It’s like Hitchcock meets lowlife atmosphere, and it works like a charm. Don’t tell anyone, but this movie is a must-see.

Critics Consensus

The Bourne Ultimatum is an intelligent, finely tuned non-stop thrill ride. Another strong performance from Matt Damon and sharp camerawork from Paul Greengrass make this the finest installment of the Bourne trilogy.

Audience Consensus

The Bourne Ultimatum is like a rollercoaster ride that you can’t get enough of, even if it makes you a little queasy. Paul Greengrass’s direction and the twitchy editing make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action, and Matt Damon’s portrayal of Bourne is both resourceful and reckless. The hand-to-hand combat scene in Morocco is a standout, but I do wish there was more time spent on the moments between the mayhem. Overall, it’s a thrilling and intense addition to the Bourne Trilogy that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Critics Consensus

Driven by Michael Moore’s sincere humanism, Sicko is a devastating, convincing, and very entertaining documentary about the state of America’s health care.

Audience Consensus

Sicko is the perfect movie to watch if you want to laugh and cry at the same time. Michael Moore’s witty humor and sharp commentary on America’s healthcare system will leave you feeling both entertained and outraged. It’s amazing to see how other countries can provide universal healthcare for their citizens, yet America still struggles to do the same. While some may criticize Moore for oversimplifying the issue, it’s hard to deny the impact that Sicko has had on the national conversation about healthcare. So grab some popcorn and get ready to be both entertained and enlightened!

Storyline

Documentary look at health care in the United States as provided by profit-oriented health maintenance organizations (HMOs) compared to free, universal care in Canada, the U.K., and France. Moore contrasts U.S. media reports on Canadian care with the experiences of Canadians in hospitals and clinics there. He interviews patients and doctors in the U.K. about cost, quality, and salaries. He examines why Nixon promoted HMOs in 1971, and why the Clintons’ reform effort failed in the 1990s. He talks to U.S. ex-pats in Paris about French services, and he takes three 9/11 clean-up volunteers, who developed respiratory problems, to Cuba for care. He asks of Americans, “Who are we?”
