Tomboy (2011)
RT Audience Score: 83%
Awards & Nominations: 10 wins & 6 nominations
Tomboy, the second film by director Celine Sciamma, is a poignant and nuanced exploration of childhood, gender identity, and self-acceptance. With stunning performances from its young cast, particularly Zoé Héran as the androgynous Laure, the film captures the fleeting moments of childhood innocence before the harsh realities of the world come crashing in. Sciamma’s direction is precise and observant, never preachy or heavy-handed, and she deftly weaves in allusions to gender roles and societal expectations. While some may find fault with the rushed third act, Tomboy remains a powerful and moving coming-of-age portrait that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.
Tomboy is a film that will make you laugh, cry, and question your own childhood memories. With a stunning performance by Zoé Héran, this coming-of-age story about gender identity is both subtle and emotional. It’s like getting a backstage pass to a childhood paradise, but with a twist. The film’s natural and believable performances from its adolescent cast will leave you feeling moved and inspired. And while the third act may be a bit rushed, it doesn’t take away from the film’s ample goodwill. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Since we are dealing with fresh-faced tweens, we are spared the gender histrionics to be found in the likes of The Crying Game or Boys Don’t Cry. Those are indeed bigger films. But sometimes small things can pay off quite nicely.

Plot
A family moves into a new neighborhood, and a 10-year-old born Laure deliberately presents as a boy named Mickäel to the neighborhood children. It is heavily implied that Mickäel is a closeted transgender boy. This film follows his experiences with his newfound friends, his potential love interest, Lisa, his younger sister and his parents. It focuses in on the significance of gender identity in social interaction from an early age, the difficulties of being transgender and young, and how Mickäel navigates these in the background of childhood play and love.

Equal parts hilarious, poignant, and heartbreaking, Project Nim not only tells a compelling story masterfully, but also raises the flag on the darker side of human nature.
Project Nim is a documentary that will make you laugh, cry, and question everything you thought you knew about animal testing. It’s like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but instead of loops and drops, you get heartbreak and existential dread. But seriously, it’s a must-watch for anyone who cares about the ethical treatment of animals and the consequences of playing god with their lives. Just make sure you have a box of tissues handy.

Plot
Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible, inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea, but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Good-natured and mirthful, Best Worst Movie is a sweet deconstruction of how a cinematic folly can become a triumph.
Best Worst Movie is a hilarious and heartwarming documentary that proves that even the worst movies can have a cult following. Watching the cast and crew of Troll 2 come to terms with their infamy is both cringe-worthy and endearing, and the film’s exploration of the strange world of B-movie fandom is fascinating. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Troll 2 or just love a good underdog story, Best Worst Movie is a must-see. Plus, who doesn’t love a good laugh at a terrible movie?

Beautifully drawn and refreshingly calm, The Secret of Kells hearkens back to animation’s golden age with an enchanting tale inspired by Irish mythology.
The Secret of Kells” is a visually stunning animated film that draws inspiration from Celtic mythology and medieval manuscripts. Critics have praised its unique and enchanting style, with some even comparing it to the works of Pixar. However, some have criticized its simple narrative, which may not fully engage all viewers. Overall, “The Secret of Kells” is a low-key pleasure that is worth seeking out for its beautiful animation and fascinating portrayal of medieval Celtic spirituality. Carlos (2010)
RT Audience Score: 85%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Despite its hefty running time, Carlos moves along briskly, thanks to an engaging story, exotic locales, and a breakout performance by Edgar Ramirez.
Carlos is the kind of movie that makes you want to start a revolution, or at least join a really cool club. It’s a thrilling ride through the life of a terrorist who’s equal parts terrifying and fascinating. Edgar Ramírez gives a performance that’s both fearless and sophisticated, and the direction by Olivier Assayas is nothing short of epic. Sure, it’s not the most lighthearted movie out there, but if you’re in the mood for something that will make you think and feel, Carlos is definitely worth a watch.
