A superbly-mounted adaptation of E.M. Forster’s tale of British class tension, with exceptional performances all round, Howard’s End ranks among the best of Merchant-Ivory’s work
Howards End is like a fancy cake that you can’t help but devour. It’s rich, sumptuous, and oh-so-filling, with layer upon layer of deliciousness. The film is a feast for the eyes, but it’s also a deeply romantic and political story that will move your heart. Sure, it may unfold at a deliberate pace, but there’s so much happening that you’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all plays out. If you’re looking for a cinematic spectacle that belongs to a bygone era, Howards End is the perfect choice.

Plot
Owen Suskind was a boy of considerable promise, until he was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. As Owen withdrew into his silent state, his parents almost lost hope that he find some way to interact with his world in some meaningful way. However, that way was found through animated films, especially those of the Walt Disney Company, which provided Owen a way to understand the world through its stories to the point of creating his own. This film covers the life of Owen and how he manages to become as functional as possible with the help of Disney and his family to the point of having his own life. However, Owen soon learns as well that there is more to real life than what Disney can illustrate in animation even as his family prepares itself for an uncertain future with him.

As unconventional and unwieldy as the life and legacy it honors, Love & Mercy should prove moving for Brian Wilson fans while still satisfying neophytes.
Love & Mercy is a wild ride through the mind of one of music’s greatest geniuses. The performances are top-notch, especially Paul Giamatti’s creepy turn as the controlling Dr. Landy. But what really sets this biopic apart is its unique approach to storytelling, focusing on the sounds and sensations that inspired Brian Wilson’s music. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the creative process and a reminder of the power of art to heal even the most troubled souls. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Beach Boys tune?

Plot
Brian Wilson is the creative soul of The Beach Boys, but he paid a heavy price for his talent. That especially shows during his peak artistic years in the 1960s, as his inner demons and obsessions trying to please his abusive father drive him to a mental breakdown that would plague him for years. In the 1980s, with Brian barely functional under the domination of the unscrupulous Dr. Landy, Brian meets and falls in love with Melinda Ledbetter. As their relationship grows, she observes Brian’s crippling subservience to the abusive psychotherapist with growing alarm. Ultimately, she must take action with a love willing to stand up to oppression she cannot ignore.

Insightful and swiftly paced, Being Evel is an entertaining, well-crafted overview of an unforgettable character
Being Evel is a documentary that explores the life of the legendary stuntman, Evel Knievel. While some critics found the film lacking in depth, others praised it for its use of original footage and dramatic storytelling. As a non-critic, I have to say that watching Evel jump over cars and buses on his motorcycle was both thrilling and terrifying. I mean, who else would attempt to jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace? The film also delves into Evel’s personal life, including his struggles with addiction and his complicated relationships with his family. Overall, Being Evel is a fascinating look at a man who became an American icon through sheer ambition and a willingness to take risks.

Court takes a penetrating, timely look at issues facing Indian society while serving as an excellent calling card for debuting writer-director Chaitanya Tamhane
Court is like a fly on the wall, but not just any fly – a fly with a keen eye, keen hearing, and a keen intelligence. This film is a fiendishly clever debut feature that takes the courtroom drama to new heights. It’s perceptive, powerful, and delivers a devastating critique of India’s justice system. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom – there are also compelling performances, infectious songs, and even a bit of humor. Distinguished by innovative technique and Emmanuelle Riva’s arresting performance, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a poignant love story as well as a thoughtful meditation on international trauma
Hiroshima Mon Amour is a visually stunning and emotionally moving film that explores the themes of war, love, and remembrance. While some may find the characters at the center of the drama less compelling, the film’s use of images and dialogue effectively conveys the sense of time obliterated and the impact of the atomic age. Plus, Emmanuelle Riva’s performance is electrifying and her beauty is truly shocking. Overall, a must-watch for cinephiles who appreciate a cinematic intelligence that can be compared with the likes of Joyce, Picasso, and Berg.

Resnais’ visual sense is matched only by such masters of images as Orson Welles or Von Sternberg.

I was arrested by the way in which the film was shot and what it was saying, but I’ll admit to not caring much about the two people at the center of Resnais’ drama.

“Hiroshima Mon Amour” will always be too studied a masterwork for some tastes. But Riva’s performance, chief among its triumphs, remains electrifying.

That rare movie in which present and past meld in every frame to convey a sense of time obliterated, or a dream having a nightmare.

The first minutes of this movie are shocking. Emmanuelle Riva knocks us off with her beauty while her character reminds us that we’ll never really know Hiroshima. [Full review in Spanish]

The makers wanted to tell the story and do, in fact, tell it through images and speech. It would be difficult to imagine a silent Hiroshima. The dialogue is never really explanatory, but rather a key component of the story.

A stunning piece of cinema, Hiroshima Mon Amour is also one of Resnais’ most emotionally affecting pieces, for one cannot help but be moved by these lovelorn people, struggling hopelessly against the onslaught of time and the doom of being forgotten.

It employs a foredoomed romance between a French actress and a Japanese architect as a narrative thread that binds together a series of haunting reflections about life in the Atomic Age.

Here — for the first time since Eisenstein — we have a cinematic intelligence so quick, so subtle, so original, so at once passionate and sophisticated that it can be compared with Joyce, with Picasso, with Berg and Bartók and Stravinksy.
