Critics Consensus

A superbly-mounted adaptation of E.M. Forster’s tale of British class tension, with exceptional performances all round, Howard’s End ranks among the best of Merchant-Ivory’s work

Audience Consensus

Howards End is like a fancy cake that you can’t help but devour. It’s rich, sumptuous, and oh-so-filling, with layer upon layer of deliciousness. The film is a feast for the eyes, but it’s also a deeply romantic and political story that will move your heart. Sure, it may unfold at a deliberate pace, but there’s so much happening that you’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all plays out. If you’re looking for a cinematic spectacle that belongs to a bygone era, Howards End is the perfect choice.

Storyline

Owen Suskind was a boy of considerable promise, until he was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. As Owen withdrew into his silent state, his parents almost lost hope that he find some way to interact with his world in some meaningful way. However, that way was found through animated films, especially those of the Walt Disney Company, which provided Owen a way to understand the world through its stories to the point of creating his own. This film covers the life of Owen and how he manages to become as functional as possible with the help of Disney and his family to the point of having his own life. However, Owen soon learns as well that there is more to real life than what Disney can illustrate in animation even as his family prepares itself for an uncertain future with him.

Critics Consensus

45 Years offers richly thought-provoking rewards for fans of adult cinema — and a mesmerizing acting showcase for leads Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay

Audience Consensus

45 Years is a movie that will make you feel like you’ve been married for 45 years by the time it’s over. But in a good way! Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay give performances that will make you want to call your significant other and tell them how much you love them. Just make sure you don’t accidentally call your ex like Tom’s character does. Oops!

Storyline

Kate (Charlotte Rampling) and Geoff Mercer (Sir Tom Courtenay) are planning to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary with dozens of friends. The event is to take place soon in the community hall of Norwich, the town near which they live. A week before the party, Geoff receives a letter which, although he tries to hide it, obviously troubles him. When his wife asks him what is going on, Geoff tells her that the body of Katya, his first great love who disappeared fifty years before in the Alps, has just been found in a melting glacier. From then on, Geoff starts behaving more and more strangely and for the first time after so many years Kate asks herself who the man she married so long ago really is.

Critics Consensus

As unconventional and unwieldy as the life and legacy it honors, Love & Mercy should prove moving for Brian Wilson fans while still satisfying neophytes.

Audience Consensus

Love & Mercy is a wild ride through the mind of one of music’s greatest geniuses. The performances are top-notch, especially Paul Giamatti’s creepy turn as the controlling Dr. Landy. But what really sets this biopic apart is its unique approach to storytelling, focusing on the sounds and sensations that inspired Brian Wilson’s music. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the creative process and a reminder of the power of art to heal even the most troubled souls. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Beach Boys tune?

Storyline

Brian Wilson is the creative soul of The Beach Boys, but he paid a heavy price for his talent. That especially shows during his peak artistic years in the 1960s, as his inner demons and obsessions trying to please his abusive father drive him to a mental breakdown that would plague him for years. In the 1980s, with Brian barely functional under the domination of the unscrupulous Dr. Landy, Brian meets and falls in love with Melinda Ledbetter. As their relationship grows, she observes Brian’s crippling subservience to the abusive psychotherapist with growing alarm. Ultimately, she must take action with a love willing to stand up to oppression she cannot ignore.

Man From Reno” is the perfect movie for those who love a good mystery and a bit of culture clash. The slow-burn narrative keeps you engaged while the stunning visuals transport you to the foggy streets of San Francisco. And let’s not forget the head of lettuce clue – who knew produce could be so intriguing? Overall, a fresh and invigorating take on the genre with well-crafted characters and performances to match.

Critics Consensus

Insightful and swiftly paced, Being Evel is an entertaining, well-crafted overview of an unforgettable character

Audience Consensus

Being Evel is a documentary that explores the life of the legendary stuntman, Evel Knievel. While some critics found the film lacking in depth, others praised it for its use of original footage and dramatic storytelling. As a non-critic, I have to say that watching Evel jump over cars and buses on his motorcycle was both thrilling and terrifying. I mean, who else would attempt to jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace? The film also delves into Evel’s personal life, including his struggles with addiction and his complicated relationships with his family. Overall, Being Evel is a fascinating look at a man who became an American icon through sheer ambition and a willingness to take risks.

Critics Consensus

Court takes a penetrating, timely look at issues facing Indian society while serving as an excellent calling card for debuting writer-director Chaitanya Tamhane

Audience Consensus

Court is like a fly on the wall, but not just any fly – a fly with a keen eye, keen hearing, and a keen intelligence. This film is a fiendishly clever debut feature that takes the courtroom drama to new heights. It’s perceptive, powerful, and delivers a devastating critique of India’s justice system. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom – there are also compelling performances, infectious songs, and even a bit of humor. Overall, Court is a beautiful and brilliant film that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll.

Critics Consensus

Paddington brings a beloved children’s character into the 21st century without sacrificing his essential charm, delivering a family-friendly adventure as irresistibly cuddly as its star.

Audience Consensus

Paddington is the kind of movie that makes you want to hug a bear, even if it’s not a talking one. It’s a heartwarming tale of acceptance and belonging, with a side of marmalade. The cast is top-notch, the animation is charming, and the humor is just right. It’s a must-watch for anyone who needs a little bit of sweetness in their life. And if you don’t like it, well, you’re probably just a grumpus who doesn’t appreciate the finer things in life, like raincoats and red hats.

Distinguished by innovative technique and Emmanuelle Riva’s arresting performance, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a poignant love story as well as a thoughtful meditation on international trauma

Audience Consensus

Hiroshima Mon Amour is a visually stunning and emotionally moving film that explores the themes of war, love, and remembrance. While some may find the characters at the center of the drama less compelling, the film’s use of images and dialogue effectively conveys the sense of time obliterated and the impact of the atomic age. Plus, Emmanuelle Riva’s performance is electrifying and her beauty is truly shocking. Overall, a must-watch for cinephiles who appreciate a cinematic intelligence that can be compared with the likes of Joyce, Picasso, and Berg.
