Sixteen Candles (1984)
RT Audience Score: 85%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 1 nomination
Significantly more mature than the teen raunch comedies that defined the era, Sixteen Candles is shot with compassion and clear respect for its characters and their hang-ups
Sixteen Candles is a classic coming-of-age film that will make you laugh, cringe, and reminisce about your own high school experiences. While some of the characters may come off as caricatures, Molly Ringwald’s natural and appealing performance as the lead will keep you rooting for her throughout the film. And let’s not forget about Michael Schoeffling’s swoon-worthy portrayal of the high school heartbreak kid. With a solid music track and quick humor, Sixteen Candles is a must-watch for anyone who wants to relive the awkwardness and hilarity of adolescence.

Her sister’s getting married, and with all the excitement the rest of her family forgets her birthday! Utterly predictable and wholly of its time, but warm, sincere, and difficult to resist, due in large part to Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio’s relaxed chemistry
The Karate Kid” is a classic ’80s teen flick that still manages to pack a punch today. Sure, it’s formulaic and predictable, but it’s also heartwarming and sincere. Plus, who can resist the unforgettable friendship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi? Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita deliver great performances that rise above the trite script. And let’s not forget Elisabeth Shue in an early role. Overall, “The Karate Kid” is a fun and uplifting movie that will have you rooting for the underdog. Wax on, wax off!

Plot
Daniel and his mother move from New Jersey to California. She has a wonderful new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that a dark haired Italian boy with a Jersey accent doesn’t fit into the blond surfer crowd. Daniel manages to talk his way out of some fights, but he is finally cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi, the elderly gardener leaps into the fray and save him by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon find out the real motivator behind the boys’ violent attitude in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament some months off. When his training begins, Daniel doesn’t understand what he is being shown. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate.

Repo Man is many things: an alien-invasion film, a punk-rock musical, a send-up of consumerism. One thing it isn’t is boring
Repo Man” is a wild ride that’s part punk rock, part sci-fi, and all kinds of weird. It’s like if “Mad Max” and “The X-Files” had a baby and that baby grew up to be Emilio Estevez. The movie is full of churlish unpleasantness, but it’s also got a core of genuine anger that makes it more than just a flabby American comedy. Plus, the punk soundtrack is killer. If you’re looking for a movie that’s off the beaten path, “Repo Man” is the way to go.

National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
RT Audience Score: 85%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Blessed by a brilliantly befuddled star turn from Chevy Chase, National Lampoon’s Vacation is one of the more consistent — and thoroughly quotable — screwball comedies of the 1980s
National Lampoon’s Vacation is a classic comedy that will have you laughing from start to finish. The Griswold family’s disastrous road trip is a hilarious journey that will make you grateful for your own family vacations. Chevy Chase’s comedic timing and zaniness are the perfect addition to this cross-country adventure. While the screenplay may be meandering at times, the film still manages to find humor in everyday situations. Overall, National Lampoon’s Vacation is a must-watch for anyone in need of a good laugh.

Plot
Having it all planned down to the last detail, the American, well-meaning paterfamilias, Clark Griswold, and his supportive wife, Ellen, take their two teenage children, Rusty and Audrey, on a cross-country trip from the suburbs of Chicago, all the way to sunny California’s Walley World amusement park. However, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and before long, Ellen’s cousin, Catherine, and her husband, Eddie, enter the picture, and Clark is on the verge of blowing a gasket. Now, Roy Walley’s wonderful park seems so far away, and even though the prospect of a clandestine meeting with the alluring blonde in a fast, 1981 Ferrari 308 GTSi sounds tempting, Clark must do the right thing, and find the promised land. How hard can it be to have the perfect vacation?

Brawny in both intellect and scope, Reds is an intimate epic that captures the tumult of revolutionary change and the passion of those navigating through it
Reds is a movie that’s as long as a CVS receipt, but don’t let that deter you from watching it. Warren Beatty gives a performance that’s so good, it’ll make you forget he was ever in Dick Tracy. The film is a mix of politics and romance, but don’t worry if you’re not into politics, you’ll still enjoy it. Just be prepared to take a few bathroom breaks. Overall, Reds is a movie that’s worth the investment of your time, just make sure you have a comfy couch and some snacks nearby.

Beatty gives the performance of his lifetime as the erratic, possessed Reed, and his grasp of the direction of an epic film is truly astonishing.

If no one will learn much about politics from this film, Beatty has nonetheless put the fire of two burning lives in it. There is plenty in it about the risks that commitment entails, but it is about commitment.

Plot
American journalist John Reed journeys to Russia to document the Bolshevik Revolution and returns a revolutionary. His fervor for left-wing politics leads him to Louise Bryant, then married, who will become a feminist icon and activist. Politics at home become more complicated as the rift grows between reality and Reed’s ideals. Bryant takes up with a cynical playwright, and Reed returns to Russia, where his health declines.
