Critics Consensus

Cheeky and infectiously good-natured, The Full Monty bares its big beating heart with a sly dose of ribald comedy

Audience Consensus

The Full Monty is the perfect movie for anyone who wants to see male strippers, but also wants to feel like they’re watching something with substance. It’s like Magic Mike, but with more heart and less Channing Tatum abs. Plus, who doesn’t love a good underdog story? It’s a feel-good movie that will leave you grinning from ear to ear, and maybe even shedding a tear or two. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show!

Storyline

In the decaying steel mill town of Sheffield in Northern England, friends Gaz and Dave, both now unemployed and on the dole after the closure of most of the town’s steel mills, steal scrap metal from the closed mills to supplement their meager income, often with Gaz’s twelve year old son, Nathan, on the days Gaz has custody. Still, Gaz is behind in child support payments to his ex-wife, Mandy. When Mandy threatens to sue for full custody in that Gaz can’t support Nathan in any way, Gaz, seeing the long line up of women clamoring to get in to see a touring Chippendales styled dance troupe, thinks he can solve his financial and thus custody problems by forming his own male exotic dance troupe with some of his fellow un- or underemployed ex-mill workers. In addition to Dave, he has in mind middle-aged Gerald, their former foreman who has not told his spending-happy wife Linda that he has been unemployed for six months, and Lomper, a mild-mannered security guard who they just met in the act of him trying to commit suicide in his depression. The obvious problem is that with the exception of Gerald who knows how to ballroom dance, they are not generally stripper material, either in looks, skill or temperament, with especially slightly overweight Dave having body image issues, he believing his wife, Jean, having a wandering eye because of what he considers his unappealing looks. In an open casting among those at the employment office, they are able to recruit further misfits Horse, an older man who does know the contemporary dances of his era, and younger Guy, who can’t dance and can’t sing but loves Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and has a natural gift below the belt. Beyond the many obstacles in being able to put together a dance strip act that women would pay to see, they have to overcome their own individual issues, Gaz’s which includes Nathan, who loves his father but with who he just wants to do “normal” father/son activities.

Critics Consensus

In some respects, Rosewood struggles to present a full picture of the real-life tragedy it dramatizes, but it remains a harrowing depiction of racial violence

Audience Consensus

Rosewood is a movie that takes on the difficult task of portraying the horrors of racial violence in America. While some critics found it lacking in certain areas, others praised its boldness and the performances of its cast. Personally, I found it to be a gripping and action-packed historical drama that sheds light on a dark chapter of our past. It’s definitely not a light-hearted movie, but it’s an important one that deserves to be seen. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Don Cheadle performance?

The best private pathologist in Miami, Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr., whose rare heart condition that could kill him at any moment fuels his lust for life, gives a second opinion when friends or family of the deceased are not satisfied with official police findings. His state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, Sherlock Holmes-like powers of deduction and quick wit are his main tools. He also relies and depends on his trusty assistants and cute couple, Pippy and TMI, and works with no-nonsense detective Annalise Villa, who doesn’t always go strictly by the book, to see the case to its conclusion.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie is like watching a hilarious commentary track on a bad movie, but with puppets. The jokes come fast and furious, and while some may find it a bit much, fans of the show will be in heaven. It’s the perfect movie to watch with a group of friends, especially if you’re looking for a good laugh and some witty commentary on a cheesy sci-fi flick. Critics Consensus

Oscar-awarded Nicolas Cage finds humanity in his character as it bleeds away in this no frills, exhilaratingly dark portrait of destruction

Audience Consensus

Leaving Las Vegas is like watching a train wreck, but with Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue giving career-best performances. Cage’s portrayal of a self-destructive alcoholic is so intense, you can practically smell the booze on his breath. The artistic direction of Mike Figgis keeps the film honest and unsentimental, making it a dark and giddy ride into the intoxicated places no movie about an alcoholic has gone before. It’s definitely not a feel-good picture, but it’s worth sticking through for the incredible acting and mesmerizing rhapsody of self-destruction. Plus, it’s a love story like no other, perfect for anyone who found The Bridges of Madison County too precious.

Critics Consensus

Impressive ambition and bravura performances from an outstanding cast help Casino pay off in spite of a familiar narrative that may strike some viewers as a safe bet for director Martin Scorsese

Audience Consensus

Casino is like a rollercoaster ride that takes you through the highs and lows of the mob world. With a star-studded cast and Scorsese’s signature style, it’s a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll probably want to take a shower after some of the scenes, but it’s all worth it for the wild ride. Just don’t try any of this at home, folks.

Without stinting on the viciousness, Scorsese still conveys an element of nostalgia in Casino, although it’s less because the movie is convinced by Ace and Nicky’s vision of the good old days than it is skepticism over what will eventually replace them.

Audience Consensus

Crimson Tide” is a movie that will have you on the edge of your seat, even if you’re not a fan of submarine movies. The tension between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington is palpable, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s like “War Games” meets “The Hunt for Red October,” but with more explosions. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good explosion? So grab some popcorn and settle in for a heart-stopping adventure that will leave you breathless.

Storyline

When some Russian rebels take control of some ICBM’s, the Americans mobilize. Among the vessels sent is the nuclear sub, USS Alabama. But before they leave they need a new X.O. and among the choices is Commander Hunter, who hasn’t seen much action. But the ship’s Captain, Ramsey, OK’s him. While on the way, there was an incident and Hunter disagreed with how Ramsey handled it. It’s evident that Ramsey doesn’t think much of Hunter because Hunter was college educated while Ramsey worked his way up. They’re given orders to attack but when they were in the process of receiving another order, the ship’s communications were damaged, so the entire message was not received. Ramsey decides to continue with their previous order while Hunter wants to reestablish contact first. That’s when the two men butt heads that ends with Hunter relieving Ramsey. Later when some men die, some of the officers feel that Hunter is not up to the task so they team up to retake control. But Hunter has taken precautions.

If you’re looking for a movie that’s both classy and crazy, The Madness of King George is the perfect pick. With a visually stunning backdrop and a cast of characters that will have you laughing and crying, this British film is a must-see.  Hytner’s version of Bennett’s comic-tragic drama of the tormented king who almost lost his mind confirms that power games, family scandals, and personal intrigues have always been integral to the British Crown, an institution both revered and reviled.

Aging King George III of England (Sir Nigel Hawthorne) is exhibiting signs of madness, a problem little understood in 1788. As the monarch alternates between bouts of confusion and near-violent outbursts of temper, his hapless doctors attempt the ineffectual cures of the day. Meanwhile, Queen Charlotte (Dame Helen Mirren) and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger (Julian Wadham) attempt to prevent the King’s political enemies, led by the Prince of Wales (Rupert Everett), from usurping the throne.

Critics Consensus

It’s solidly directed by Robert Benton and stacked with fine performances from an impressive cast, but above all, Nobody’s Fool is a showcase for some of Paul Newman’s best late-period work

Audience Consensus

Nobody’s Fool is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and feel all the feels. Paul Newman shines as the charming yet flawed Sully, and the supporting cast is just as delightful. It’s a heartwarming story about small-town life that doesn’t feel cheesy or overdone. Plus, who doesn’t love a movie where an old teddy bear is described as cuddly? If you’re in the mood for a feel-good movie that will leave you with a smile on your face, Nobody’s Fool is the perfect choice.

Critics Consensus

Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys is a film that transcends time, both in its narrative and its relevance. While some critics may argue that it lacks the visual and emotional impact of his previous works, such as Brazil and The Fisher King, it is undeniable that Gilliam’s signature style is present in every frame. The film’s blend of virus thriller and post-apocalyptic genre, along with its contemplation of circularities of time and apocalypse culture, make it a pop miracle that still resonates with audiences today. As we navigate our own uncertain future, 12 Monkeys serves as a warning and a reminder that the choices we make today will shape the world of tomorrow.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that will make you question everything you know about time travel, viruses, and the future, then 12 Monkeys is the film for you. Terry Gilliam’s dystopian sci-fi is a wild ride that will leave you both intellectually stimulated and emotionally drained. Sure, it’s a bit of a mess, but what do you expect from a movie that blends virus thrillers with post-apocalyptic genres? Plus, Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt give performances that are out of this world. So, grab some popcorn, buckle up, and get ready to travel through time with 12 Monkeys.
