Critics Consensus

Steve Carell’s first star turn scores big with a tender treatment of its titular underdog, using raunchy but realistically funny comedy to connect with adult audiences

Audience Consensus

The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a hilarious movie that will have you laughing from start to finish. Steve Carell’s portrayal of Andy Stitzer is both endearing and relatable, and the supporting cast of sketch comics adds to the film’s overall comedic value. While some may find the raunchy humor a bit over the top, it’s hard not to appreciate the attention to detail and the film’s underlying sweetness. Plus, who doesn’t love a good spit-take? Overall, The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a must-watch for anyone in need of a good laugh.

Storyline

Forty-year-old Andy, an electronics store shipping clerk, is a stereotypical geek, who plays video games and takes care of his collectible action figures. He has no real friends and spends most of his time away from work by himself. Despite having an interest in the opposite sex philosophically as witnessed by his constant and uncontrollable morning erections, he is still a virgin. He never planned not to have sex, but it became more and more difficult to have that first experience as he got older, to the point where, to him, it became a reality for his life. When his work colleagues find out, some mock and ridicule him, while a small group comprised of Dave, Jay and Cal take it upon themselves to help him get laid, despite each of three having their own relationship issue making them perhaps not the best people to provide advice or assistance. Andy also gets some unexpected suggestions from some standing on the sidelines of his life. Beyond that advice, Andy has to be the one to take the ultimate step to reality, he not only having no practical experience, but also no theoretical experience in that he doesn’t even watch or have interest in porn or masturbate. Some of the advice he receives centers on the actual woman who should be his first time. Regardless of that advice, he decides that the woman he truly wants is Trish, a specialty retailer with a somewhat useless bricks and mortar outlet across the street from the electronics store. As Andy pursues then eventually falls for Trish, he has to decide how much of his true self he will divulge to her.

Critics Consensus

Ferpect Crime is a film that transcends the boundaries of farce and satire, delving into the depths of human nature and the consequences of unchecked desire. The film’s clever send-up of retail culture and movie thrillers is only the tip of the iceberg, as it explores the complexities of power dynamics and sexual fetishism. While some may find the film’s philosophy shaky, it is impossible to deny the sheer inventiveness of its plot and the outrageous style that permeates every frame. Toledo’s performance as Rafael is a standout, delivering hilarious moments that will leave audiences in stitches. In short, Ferpect Crime is a dark comedy that is not to be missed, a film that will leave you pondering the intricacies of human behavior long after the credits roll.

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that’s part farce, part satire, and all fun, then Ferpect Crime is the perfect choice. This Spanish-language romp takes on everything from retail culture to movie thrillers, and it’s all held together by the hilarious performance of Guillermo Toledo as Rafael, the ultimate ladies’ man who finally gets what’s coming to him. Sure, the second half isn’t quite as funny as the first, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? So grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready for a crime that’s ferpectly entertaining.

Storyline

An impending much-sought-after promotion at Yeyo’s shopping mall in Madrid has created quite a stir, as a new floor supervisor needs to be chosen between Don Antonio, the helpful, experienced, yet, stern and gloomy head of the men’s department and Rafael, the seductive, highly skilled salesman and head of the women’s department. Without a doubt, competition is hard when there’s only room for one, however, when the suave and sophisticated Rafael loses out to his inelegant arch nemesis, he will find himself in a very tight spot when during an argument, he will accidentally kill Don Antonio. Obviously, with him as a prime suspect, handsome Rafael is in dire straits and desperate as he is, he will inevitably accept help from Lourdes, the department’s ugly duckling who unfortunately knows all about his misfortune, nevertheless, not without a cost. With his life literally in Lourdes’ hands, blackmailed into her preposterous demands, there is only one way out and Rafael will need to stain his hands with blood once more, but shortly, he will learn that there is no such thing as the ferpect crime.

2046 is a film that transcends time and space, weaving together a tapestry of nostalgia, regret, and desire. Wong Kar-wai’s direction is nothing short of masterful, as he effortlessly blends together elements of period drama and science fiction to create a world that is both familiar and otherworldly. The film’s nonlinear structure only adds to its allure, as we are taken on a journey through multiple realities that feel real and tangible. The result is a sumptuous feast for the senses, a cinematic experience that is both hauntingly beautiful and deeply moving. If you’re looking for a film that will transport you to another world, look no further than 2046.

Critics Consensus

Snappy dialogue and goofy characters make this Wild Wild West soap opera in space fun and adventurous

Audience Consensus

Serenity is the perfect movie for anyone who loves a good sci-fi adventure with a side of humor. Joss Whedon’s directorial debut is a continuation of his cult classic series Firefly, and it does not disappoint. The characters are complex and relatable, the action is thrilling, and the special effects are out of this world. Plus, if you don’t go see it, Nick Funnell from Time Out will come after your kittens. So, do yourself a favor and watch Serenity – your kittens will thank you.

Critics Consensus

The Beat That My Heart Skipped is a cinematic masterpiece that delves into the complexities of a man torn between two worlds and passions. Romain Duris delivers a simmering performance as Tom, a petty hood-cum-wannabe pianist, whose handsome, delicate face combines rage and vulnerability. The film’s gritty urban romance touches on the fascinating ways that music and psychological states of mind interact or clash in a dissonant and chaotic modern world. Niels Arestrup is striking as the hero’s slumlord father, and the rest of the cast delivers phenomenal performances. This film is a nuanced portrait of a conflicted young man who can never completely break away from the dark world in which he has grown up. It’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates intelligent, thought-provoking cinema.

Audience Consensus

The Beat That My Heart Skipped is a movie that will leave you feeling like you just got off a rollercoaster. Romain Duris’ performance as Tom is like watching a ticking time bomb, and you can’t help but be drawn in by his simmering intensity. The film’s exploration of the clash between two worlds and passions is both nuanced and gritty, and the music adds an extra layer of tension. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves a good character study with a side of violence.

Movie Info

Storyline

Twenty-eight-year-old Tom leads a life that might be termed as criminal. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of his father, who made his money from dirty, and sometimes brutal, real estate deals. Tom is a pretty hard-boiled guy but also strangely considerate as far as his father is concerned. Somehow he appears to have arrived at a critical juncture in his life when a chance encounter prompts him to take up the piano and become a concert pianist, like his mother. He senses that this might be his final opportunity to take back his life. His piano teacher is a Chinese piano virtuoso who has recently come to live in France. She doesn’t speak a lick of French so music becomes the only language they have in common. Before long, Jacques’ bid to be a better person means that he begins to yearn for true love. But, when he finally has the chance of winning his best friend’s wife, his passion only succeeds in scaring her. And then, one day, his dubious past comes to light…

Cinderella Man is a movie that packs a punch, both literally and emotionally. Ron Howard delivers a classic underdog story that will have you rooting for James J. Braddock from start to finish. The fight scenes are intense and realistic, and Russell Crowe gives a knockout performance as the titular character. Sure, it may be a bit sentimental at times, but who doesn’t love a good underdog story? It may not be Rocky, but it’s definitely a contender.

During the Great Depression, common-man hero James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), aka the Cinderella Man, was to become one of the most surprising sports legends in history. By the early 1930s, the impoverished ex-prizefighter was seemingly as broken-down, beaten-up, and out-of-luck as much of the rest of the American populace who had hit rock bottom. His career appeared to be finished, he was unable to pay the bills, his family

Movie Plot & More
Plot
During the Great Depression, common-man hero James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), aka the Cinderella Man, was to become one of the most surprising sports legends in history. By the early 1930s, the impoverished ex-prizefighter was seemingly as broken-down, beaten-up, and out-of-luck as much of the rest of the American populace who had hit rock bottom. His career appeared to be finished, he was unable to pay the bills, his family

Critics Consensus

While Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior may be no great shakes as a movie, critics are hailing the emergence of a new star in Tony Jaa, whose athletic performance is drawing comparisons with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li

Audience Consensus

Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior is a movie that will make you want to hit the gym and learn some Muay Thai. Tony Jaa’s moves are jaw-dropping and his athleticism is out of this world. Sure, the plot is bare-bones and the choreography can be a bit ridiculous at times (major appliances as weapons, really?), but who cares when you have Jaa doing his thing on screen? Hollywood suits would be nuts not to give him a role in every action flick they make from now on. Plus, watching this movie will make you appreciate what the human body is capable of, even if you can’t do a split like Jaa.

Guerilla is a riveting documentary that chronicles in enlightening fashion the 1974 kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst

Audience Consensus

Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst is a documentary that will make you feel like you’re living in the 70s. It’s a wild ride that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the SLA and Patty Hearst. The film does an excellent job of piecing together the events of the kidnapping and the aftermath, and it’s fascinating to see how the media played a role in shaping the public’s perception of the situation. Overall, it’s a must-watch for anyone interested in true crime or counter-culture history. Plus, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned heist story?

Delivering a quirky spin on familiar twentysomething tropes — with a cannily-placed soundtrack — Garden State has enough charm to mark a winning debut for first-time director Zach Braff

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and question your own existence, then Garden State is the perfect film for you. With a cast of lovable characters and a soundtrack that will make you want to dance in a garbage bag, this movie captures the essence of what it means to be a lost twenty-something trying to find your way in the world. And if you’re not a fan of Paul Simon or Nick Drake, well, we can’t be friends.

On the basis that it behoves all of us to keep a little nugget of our 15-year-old selves locked up in our breasts, I’m going to say this is a loveable film and that you should all go and see it to awake your inner adolescent.

Braff captures the specific, self-involved ennui of the aimless 20-something, and he doesn’t do it from a point of smug detachment.

Feels too piecemeal and ultimately inconsequential to grab the public where it counts.

This is a movie where ‘sensitivity’ and ‘sincerity’ are signposted by songs by Paul Simon and Nick Drake, which I guess says it all.

The fact that the pinnacle of this film puts the three lead characters in garbage bags yelling nonsense into the air is much more scathing than any review that could ever be written.

I found myself experiencing fits of laughter and tears for a good two hours following my viewing of Garden State.

It’s no longer a generational alarm clock, but for those who’ve seen loved ones stumble through complacent fogs of Paxil, Zoloft and the like, “Garden State” still warns that “stability” doesn’t mean a numbness to anything not emotionally even-keeled.

Actor Zach Braff (NBC’s “Scrubs”) makes an impressive if unsatisfying writing and directing debut with a plaintive post-modern drama that relies on unspoken dry wit to entertain its audience (think a cross between “Harold and Maude” and “The Graduate”).

Braff, who also wrote and directs, tells this story with great flair, lots of subtlety and a wonderfully paced set of revelations that come to us just as they might in real life.
