Superbad (2007)
RT Audience Score: 87%
Awards & Nominations: 11 wins & 24 nominations
Deftly balancing vulgarity and sincerity while placing its protagonists in excessive situations, Superbad is an authentic take on friendship and the overarching awkwardness of the high school experience
Superbad is the ultimate coming-of-age movie that will make you laugh, cringe, and maybe even shed a tear. It’s a hilarious and heartwarming story about two best friends trying to score alcohol and girls before they head off to college. The witty banter between Michael Cera and Jonah Hill is pure gold, and the awkward situations they find themselves in will have you squirming in your seat. It’s like American Pie meets Dazed and Confused, but with a lot more heart. So grab some popcorn, a cold one, and get ready for a wild ride.

Seth and Evan are best friends, inseparable, navigating the last weeks of high school. Usually shunned by the popular kids, Seth and Evan luck into an invitation to a party, and spend a long day, with the help of their nerdy friend Fogell, trying to score enough alcohol to lubricate the party and inebriate two girls, Jules and Becca, so they can kick-start their sex lives and go off to college with a summer full of experience and new skills. Their quest is complicated by Fogell’s falling in with two inept cops who both slow and assist the plan. If they do get the liquor to the party, what then? Is sex the only rite of passage at hand?

Plot
Rancher Dan Evans heads into Bisbee to clear up issues concerning the sale of his land when he witnesses the closing events of a stagecoach robbery led by famed outlaw Ben Wade. Shortly thereafter, Wade is captured by the law in Bisbee and Evans finds himself one of the escorts who will take Wade to the 3:10 to Yuma train in Contention for the reward of $200. Evans’ effort to take Wade to the station is in part an effort to save his land but also part of an inner battle to determine whether he can be more than just a naive rancher in the eyes of his impetuous and gun slinging son William Evans. The transport to Contention is hazardous and filled with ambushes by Indians, pursuits by Wade’s vengeful gang and Wade’s own conniving and surreptitious demeanor that makes the ride all the more intense.

Ten Canoes is a cinematic masterpiece that seamlessly blends anthropology and entertainment, resulting in a film that is both intellectually stimulating and visually stunning. The raw power of the story, filled with myth, magic, and misadventure, is perfectly balanced with an earthy, universally appealing sense of humor. The film’s engrossing and witty cultural document is a testament to the filmmakers’ ability to capture indigenous Australia with warmth and humor. With a cast led by the canny, subtle, and funny narrator Gulpilil, Ten Canoes is a must-see for anyone who appreciates a well-told story, spear fights, and a celebration of community and ritual.
Ten Canoes is a movie that’s both educational and entertaining. It’s like watching a National Geographic documentary, but with a sense of humor. The film tells the story of an indigenous Australian tribe and their way of life, but it’s not all serious. There are moments of levity and even some spear fights. The narrator, Gulpilil, is a delight to listen to and his wit adds to the charm of the movie. Overall, Ten Canoes is a unique and enjoyable experience that’s worth checking out.

Plot
A story within a story. In Australia’s Northern Territory, a man tells us one of the stories of his people and his land. It’s a story of an older man, Minygululu, who has three wives and realizes that his younger brother Dayindi may try to steal away the youngest wife. So, over a few days and several trips to hunt and gather, Minygululu tells Dayindi a story set in the time of their ancestors when a stranger came to the village and disrupted the lives of a serious man named Ridjimiraril, his three wives, and his younger brother Yeeralparil who had no wife and liked to visit his youngest sister-in-law. Through stories, can values be taught and balance achieved?

Plot
Paris, Je T’aime] is about the plurality of cinema in one mythic location: Paris, the City of Love. 20 filmmakers have five minutes each; the audience must weave a single narrative out of twenty moments. The 20 moments are fused by transitional interstitial sequences and also via the introduction and epilogue. Each transition begins with the last shot of the previous film and ends with the first shot of the following film, extending the enchantment and the emotion of the previous segment, preparing the audience for a surprise, and providing a cohesive atmosphere. There’s a reappearing mysterious character who is a witness to the Parisian life. A common theme of Paris and love fuses all.

Boy A (2007)
RT Audience Score: 87%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Small in scale but large in impact, Boy A’s career making performances (particularly that by star Andrew Garfield) and carefully crafted characters defy judgment and aggressively provoke debate
Boy A” is a movie that will make you feel sympathy for the devil, or at least for the main character Jack. Andrew Garfield’s performance is so good that you’ll forget he’s Spider-Man. The movie is a bit slow at times, but it’s worth it to see Jack’s physical and mental dislocation. Overall, “Boy A” is a haunting drama that challenges the limits of redemption and forgiveness. It’s a thought-provoking movie that avoids exploitation while never soft-selling its thorny subject matter. So, grab some popcorn and get ready to ponder whether outrage might also have a statute of limitations.

A powerfully humanistic portrayal of the perils of war, this companion piece to Flags of our Fathers is potent and thought-provoking, and it demonstrates Clint Eastwood’s maturity as a director
Letters from Iwo Jima” is a war movie that will make you feel all the feels. Clint Eastwood did a great job showing both sides of the battle, and you can’t help but feel for the soldiers on both sides. Plus, you’ll realize just how young and innocent many of these men were before they were turned into killing machines. Plot
The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester amongst his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya), a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese Army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination.

Children of Men works on every level: as a violent chase thriller, a fantastical cautionary tale, and a sophisticated human drama about societies struggling to live
Children of Men is a visually stunning film that takes place in a world where hope is scarce and Michael Caine is a scene-stealer. The action scenes are intense and realistic, but the plot falls short in its attempt to tie everything together. Despite this, the film offers a humanist message that is both achingly optimistic and dreamy. Cuaron’s filmmaking is top-notch, with extended shots that will leave you in awe. Overall, Children of Men is a class act that takes filmmaking to a whole new level.

Children of Men founders in its latter moments — not a lot, but enough. Its failure is less one of plot than of something deeper, a composing idea to undergird the plot.

A film that has much to recommend it, not least the proof it offers, as if any more were needed, that Alfonso Cuarón is one of the most visually inspired directors working today.

Alfonso Cuaron stages some terrific set-pieces, and the production designers deserve credit for making London in 2027 look like the grunge capital of the world, ie, like now, only more so. One small problem: I didn’t believe any of it.

For all Cuarón’s expertise in whipping up his film’s elements into a pungent and frightening stew, the movie’s technical brilliance can be blinding. The story and characters remain all but skeletal.

If you thought the battle scenes in… Saving Private Ryan were tough going, the final 20 minutes of Children of Men will not only shake you, they’ll have you revising your expectations about just how realistic cinematic portrayals of combat can get.

It’s good to be hopeful, but it’s even better to be hopeful on the basis of something substantial and fully thought out. The difficulty is that the film’s various elements do not fully cohere.

Gone With The Twins…
Plot
In the dystopian world of 2027 London, humans have been incapable of reproducing for 18 year for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Britain is the one remaining civilized society on the planet, which has resulted in people wanting to migrate there, so it has become a police state to handle the immigrants, who are placed into refugee camps. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, whom he hasn’t seen in almost 20 years, since their marriage disintegrated after their infant son Dylan’s death during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people, and she wants Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what’s going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee’s lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey. But Theo’s sole mission becomes to help Kee at any cost for the survival of the species.

Half Nelson features powerful performances from Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps. It’s a wise, unsentimental portrait of lonely people at the crossroads
Half Nelson is a film that will leave you feeling like you just got hit with a half nelson (in a good way). Ryan Gosling’s performance as a self-destructive teacher is so mesmerizing that you’ll forget he’s not a real person. And Shareeka Epps is a force to be reckoned with as Drey, a young girl with a self-possession that will make you question your own maturity. The film doesn’t know how good it is, but we do. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and get ready to be moved, uplifted, and maybe even a little bit humored.

Ryan Gosling’s self-destructive teacher is easily the year’s most mesmerizing character study. And he’s hardly the only reason to see this film. Shareeka Epps anchors her scenes as Drey with a self-possession way beyond her years.

The Film Yap…
Plot
Young Caucasian Dan Dunne teaches history and coaches the girls basketball team at a Brooklyn high school populated primarily by black and Hispanic students. To the chagrin of his superiors, Dan bucks the outlined curriculum of historical facts in favor of the philosophy of historical events, generally discussing the concept of dialectics. As such, he captures the imagination of his students, at least in the classroom. Outside of the classroom, Dan’s life is in shambles. He has a distant but cordial relationship with his family. He uses illicit drugs rampantly. Although his former girlfriend Rachel was able to clean up her drug habit, Dan believes that rehab will not work for him. Due to a combination of these issues, he treats women poorly. Thirteen-year-old Drey is a student in his class and a player on his basketball team. Drey has her own problems. Her parents are divorced, with her father a virtually non-existent figure in her life and her EMT mother generally absent as she is always working to provide for Drey. Her older brother Mike is incarcerated for selling drugs for a local dealer named Frank. Mike took the fall for Frank, who in turn protects Drey whether she wants to be associated with him or not. Dan and Drey’s relationship changes when Drey catches Dan, believing he is alone, smoking crack in the girl’s locker room bathroom. He is totally stoned. Their resulting friendship, which is seen as inappropriate by the few who know, is based on each being unable to deal with their own life, but feeling like they can be at least a minor salvation in the other’s life.
