What’s Love Got to Do with It? (2023)
RT Audience Score: 93%
Awards & Nominations: NA
What’s Love Got to Do With It? is a film that, while formulaic, manages to charm its way into the hearts of viewers with the help of its attractive and likable leads. Lily James shines as always, elevating the movie with her presence, while the direction of Shekhar Kapur allows for a diverse portrayal of London’s cultural melting pot. While the ending may be predictable, the film still manages to challenge the idea of love as a sweet old-fashioned notion, proving that romantic comedies can still provide comfort and amusement without being overly saccharine. Overall, a mild-mannered movie that may not ruffle many feathers, but is still an enjoyable watch.
What’s Love Got to Do With It? is the perfect rom-com for those who just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a predictable yet heartwarming story. Lily James shines as always, and the diverse cast adds a refreshing twist to the classic East-meets-West trope. Sure, it’s not going to win any awards for originality, but who cares when you’re rooting for the charming leads to get together and live happily ever after? So grab some popcorn, snuggle up with your significant other (or your cat), and let yourself be swept away by the power of love (and attractive actors).

Alice, Darling (2022)
RT Audience Score:
Awards & Nominations: NA
Alice Darling is a film that delicately and powerfully explores the psychological damage of abusive relationships, with a focus on the bonds of sisterhood and the healing power of love. While some critics have found fault with the narrative pacing and lack of a clear story arc, the performances of Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Wunmi Mosaku are electric and captivating. Kendrick, in particular, shines in a non-comedic role, showcasing her depth and range as an actress. The film’s ability to balance heavy themes with moments of levity and hope is a testament to the skill of director Mary Nighy and screenwriter Alanna Francis. Overall, Alice Darling is a must-see for anyone interested in nuanced explorations of trauma and healing.
Alice Darling is a movie that will make you feel all the emotions. From the powerful performances of Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Wunmi Mosaku to the heart-wrenching story of psychological manipulation and abuse, this film will leave you feeling both devastated and hopeful. While it may not be the most lighthearted movie out there, it’s definitely worth a watch for anyone who wants to see a story about the strength of sisterhood and the power of love to heal even the deepest wounds. Emily the Criminal is a refreshing take on the crime thriller genre, thanks to John Patton Ford’s smart direction and a standout performance from Aubrey Plaza. Plaza’s portrayal of Emily brings an authenticity to the story that elevates it beyond a traditional thriller. The film never shies away from Emily’s past misdeeds, but instead presents her as a messy and believable character. Ford’s script is astute in its mix of character study, crime thriller, and critique of a rigged economic system. Emily the Criminal is a cinematic expression of the hypocrisy of accountability and how it ties into opportunity, giving voice to those who are rarely heard. Overall, this film is a must-watch for anyone looking for a thought-provoking and entertaining experience.

Procession” is a documentary that will make you feel all the feels. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s worth it. The film follows six abuse survivors as they process their pain through art. Watching them create their short films is inspiring, but it’s the moments in between that really hit home. You see the sense of community that binds them together and the hope that they have for a better future. It’s a powerful reminder that healing is possible, even in the darkest of times. Plus, the film has David Lynch’s seal of approval, so you know it’s good.

Procession is a film that makes you think. It certainly doesn’t make you comfortable.

These guys are the ones who step willingly into the worst moments of their lives, jumping into an abyss with the faith that there may be something healing on the other side. Name something that’s more heroic than that.

None of this is very easy. But if evil only dissipates when light hits it, then the first step is letting light in.

Observational documentaries are by nature intrusive, but “Procession,” miraculously, never feels that way – you sense humane engagement, not imposition.

Look closer, and you’ll begin to see that this film is really about something just as profound but somehow very different: the power of art to heal.

By the mid-section, the narrative starts to follow a pattern of prep scenes, filming, emotional catharsis, and then repeat. Yet Procession never becomes monotonous because each mans journey has its own twists and turns.

“Watching the short films they create may give ‘Procession’ its momentum, but its richness is derived in the moments between takes, in the sense of community that comes to bind them as they will themselves and each other forward.”

Always Good Movies
Procession gives outsiders an intimate view of the damage done by abuse. It gives survivors a chance to see that there is hope: that the pain and the panic and other debilitating symptoms can recede, and there can be a life afterwards.
