Critics Consensus

Interstellar is a film that demands attention, not just for its stunning visuals and epic scope, but for its willingness to tackle complex scientific concepts and philosophical questions. While some may find it overly complicated, those who are willing to engage with its ideas will be rewarded with a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience. Christopher Nolan’s direction is masterful, and Matthew McConaughey delivers a career-best performance as Cooper, a man driven by love and a desire to save humanity. It’s a film that will leave you breathless and contemplating the mysteries of the universe long after the credits roll.

Audience Consensus

Interstellar is like a rollercoaster ride through space and time, with stunning visuals and mind-bending concepts that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the universe. Sure, it’s a bit complicated and maybe a little too long, but it’s worth it for the emotional journey and the sheer spectacle of it all. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Matthew McConaughey performance? Strap in and get ready for a wild ride.

Critics Consensus

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Elena is a masterful exploration of the complexities of modern Russian society, deftly weaving together themes of class, capitalism, and the human condition. With luxurious cinematography and restrained performances, particularly from the talented Nadezhda Markina, Elena is a slow-burning thriller that will leave even the most closeted pessimist feeling oddly satisfied. Zvyagintsev’s expert direction constructs a world that is both vivid and oblique, spinning a web of intrigue that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. This film is a deeply satisfying and intelligent exploration of the human psyche, and a must-see for anyone interested in the complexities of contemporary Russian society.

Audience Consensus

Elena is like a Russian nesting doll – it may seem simple on the outside, but as you peel back the layers, you’ll find a complex and chilling thriller. Andrey Zvyagintsev’s direction is masterful, painting a vivid picture of contemporary Moscow society that will leave you feeling like you need a shot of vodka to warm up. But don’t worry, you won’t need subtitles for that. Overall, Elena is a must-see for anyone who loves a good slow-burn thriller with a side of social commentary.

Critics Consensus

Topped with bittersweet humor but possessing surprisingly thorny depths, Le Week-End offers a sophisticated, well-acted portrait of late-life struggles and long-term marriage

Audience Consensus

Le Week-End is like a romantic comedy for the mature crowd, with all the awkwardness and charm that comes with it. The film follows a couple as they navigate their relationship during a weekend trip to Paris, and the result is a heartwarming and hilarious journey. With fantastic performances from Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan, and even a surprise appearance from Jeff Goldblum, Le Week-End is a must-see for anyone who’s ever been in love (or just wants to laugh).

Storyline

Meg, a teacher, and husband Nick, a philosophy lecturer who may just be about to get the push on the eve of retirement, spend a week-end in Paris to celebrate their thirtieth anniversary. He is staid, annoying his foul-mouthed wife who wants to turn the holiday into a series of exciting new experiences, booking into a hotel that stretches their budgets and running off from a restaurant without paying. She is also averse to his touching her and what was meant to be a belated second honeymoon is a depressing affair, full of arguments – including one about the son who has recently left home to live in squalor and whom Meg does not want to return. By chance they meet an old university friend of Nick, Morgan, an American high-flyer who invites them to a party where Meg can still turn men’s heads and Nick has a conversation with Morgan’s young son, leading him to believe that he is not as badly off as he had presumed. Ultimately there appears to be hope for the marriage.

Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she begins to wonder whether she’s inherited her overactive imagination, or if the house is in fact possessed by a hostile spirit who’s less than happy about the new living arrangement.

O’Reilly is terrific as the sneery discontent at the centre of the madcap maelstrom, while Rima Te Wiata walks a wonderfully fine line between pathos and aggravation as the long-suffering/insufferable mum whose forced smile is about to crack.

Movie Plot & More
Plot

Critics Consensus

Disturbing, thought-provoking, and timely, Narco Cultura sheds some crucial light on an important — and underserved — subject

Audience Consensus

Narco Cultura is a documentary that will make you want to hide under your bed and never come out. It’s a terrifying look at the Mexican drug wars and how they’ve infiltrated every aspect of society, from music to movies. But don’t let that scare you away from watching it! The film is eye-opening and thought-provoking, and it will leave you with a new understanding of the world we live in. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter for your next dinner party. Just make sure you have plenty of tequila on hand to calm your nerves.

To a growing number of Mexicans and Latinos in the Americas, narco traffickers have become iconic outlaws and the new models of fame and success. Smart, funny, and profoundly melancholy, Inside Llewyn Davis finds the Coen brothers in fine form

Audience Consensus

Inside Llewyn Davis is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but instead of screaming in terror, you’re screaming in frustration at the main character’s terrible decisions. Oscar Isaac’s performance is so good, you’ll want to punch him in the face one minute and then give him a hug the next. The Coen brothers perfectly capture the folk scene of the 60s, and the soundtrack is so good, you’ll be humming “Please Mr. Kennedy” for days. Overall, it’s a movie about the struggles of life, but with a touch of humor and heart.

Critics Consensus

Its screenplay isn’t as graceful as the choreography of its action sequences, but A Touch of Sin offers enough stylishly satisfying violence to muscle past its rough spots

Audience Consensus

A Touch of Sin is like a Chinese version of Pulp Fiction, but instead of gangsters, it’s about people pushed to the brink of violence by the harsh realities of modern life. It’s a brutal and unflinching look at corruption, greed, and desperation, but it’s also a beautifully crafted film that’s full of heart and soul. Jia Zhangke is a master filmmaker, and this is one of his best works yet. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you think, feel, and maybe even squirm a little, then A Touch of Sin is definitely worth checking out.

The portrait it paints of modern China, and much of the modern world by extension, is not a pretty one, but where nihilism is often an easy resort for the cynical, Zhangke’s is considered, thoughtful, and inconclusive.

Critics Consensus

The Spectacular Now is an adroit, sensitive film that avoids typical coming-of-age story trappings

Audience Consensus

The Spectacular Now is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, taking you from laughter to tears and back again. The chemistry between Teller and Woodley is electric, and the film captures the essence of teenage life in a way that feels both honest and relatable. Sure, it may not be the smartest movie out there, but sometimes you just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good coming-of-age story. And that’s exactly what The Spectacular Now delivers. So grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready for a wild ride.

Storyline

Sutter Keely lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whiskey-fortified thirst-master cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finecky hovering over him. She’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. While Aimee has dreams of a future, Sutter lives in the impressive delusion of a spectacular now, yet somehow, they’re drawn together.

Bolstered by a strong performance from Matthew McConaughey in the title role, Mud offers an engaging Southern drama that manages to stay sweet and heartwarming without being sappy

Audience Consensus

Mud is a movie that will make you feel like you’re right there in the thick of it, with all the mud and grit and heartache. It’s a coming-of-age story that’s both simple and complex, with a cast that delivers dialogue so natural you’ll forget you’re watching a movie. And let’s not forget the Southern Gothic production design that will transport you straight to the bayou. Matthew McConaughey shines in this film, continuing his streak of great performances. So grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready to be swept away by the magic of Mud.

Storyline

14 year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan) lives on a makeshift houseboat on the banks of a river in Arkansas with his parents, Mary Lee (Sarah Paulson) and Senior (Ray McKinnon). He sneaks out early one morning to meet his best friend, Neckbone (Jacob Lofland). Neckbone, also 14, lives with his uncle, Galen (Michael Shannon), who makes a hardscrabble living diving for oysters. The two boys set out to an island on the Mississippi River, where Neckbone has discovered an unusual sight-a boat, suspended high in the trees, a remnant of an extreme flood some time in the past. They climb the tree and into the boat only to find fresh bread and fresh footprints. Realizing that they are not the only ones who have discovered the treehouse boat, they decide to leave. When they reach the shore, they find the same footprint in their boat. And that’s when they meet Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Mud is a gritty, superstitious character; his clothes are dirty, his tooth is cracked, and he needs help. He tells the boys he will give them the treehouse boat, his current hideout, in exchange for food. Neckbone is reluctant, but Ellis brings food to Mud, and they develop a tentative friendship. Ellis learns that Mud has killed a man in Texas, and police and bounty hunters are looking for him, but Mud is more concerned about reuniting with his longtime love, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Ellis, who has recently developed his own crush, agrees to help Mud escape with Juniper. Ellis and Neckbone carry out bold schemes in an effort to protect Mud and relay messages to Juniper, who is holed up in a fleabag motel, under constant surveillance by Carver (Paul Sparks), a Texas bounty hunter. Carver and his gang are intent on capturing Mud, on orders from the cold-blooded King (Joe Don Baker). As the boys risk everything to reunite these seeming mythical lovers, Ellis’s own ideas about love and romance are challenged by the strains in the relationships closest to him: his parents’ marriage is dissolving while he himself falters in his efforts to impress May Pearl (Bonnie Sturdivant). Through it all, Ellis struggles to look for an example of love that he can believe in, learning about the unspoken rules and risks of love and the reality of heartbreak.

Mud is beautiful, emotional and lyrical. This is a strong coming-of-age story … both simple and dense at the same time, a combination that creates one of this year’s best films.

This ain’t the “magically tingly” kind of fairy tale. It’s the “fundamentally flawed indication of where a culture is at” kind of fairy tale.

Movie Plot & More
Plot
