Critics Consensus

Whether you choose to see it as a statement on consumer culture or simply a special effects-heavy popcorn flick, Gremlins is a minor classic

Audience Consensus

Gremlins is the perfect holiday movie for those who want a little bit of horror mixed in with their Christmas cheer. It’s a hilarious and chaotic ride that will have you rooting for the little monsters wreaking havoc on a small town. Plus, who doesn’t love a good social critique of Reagan-era consumerism? It’s a classic that still holds up today, and it’s sure to become a staple of your holiday movie marathon. Just make sure to keep your own mogwai away from any water or food after midnight!

Storyline

Minature green monsters tear through the small town of Kingston Falls. Hijinks ensue as a mild-mannered bank teller releases these hideous loonies after gaining a new pet and violating two of three simple rules: No water (violated), no food after midnight (violated), and no bright light. Hilarious mayhem and destruction in a town straight out of Norman Rockwell. So, when your washing machine blows up or your TV goes on the fritz, before you call the repair man, turn on all the lights and look under all the beds. ‘Cause you never can tell, there just might be a gremlin in your house.

Critics Consensus

Featuring deft interplay between Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, Trading Places is an immensely appealing social satire

Audience Consensus

Trading Places is a classic comedy that still holds up today. Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd are a dynamic duo that will have you laughing out loud. The supporting cast is also fantastic, especially Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy as the meddling oldsters. The film’s exploration of race and class is still relevant, even if some aspects are a bit problematic by today’s standards. Overall, Trading Places is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good laugh and a bit of social commentary. Plus, who doesn’t love a good bet-gone-wrong storyline?

Storyline

Louis Winthorpe is a businessman who works for commodities brokerage firm of Duke and Duke owned by the brothers Mortimer and Randolph Duke. Now they bicker over the most trivial of matters and what they are bickering about is whether it’s a person’s environment or heredity that determines how well they will do in life. When Winthorpe bumps into Billy Ray Valentine, a street hustler and assumes he is trying to rob him, he has him arrested. Upon seeing how different the two men are, the brothers decide to make a wager as to what would happen if Winthorpe loses his job, his home and is shunned by everyone he knows and if Valentine was given Winthorpe’s job. So they proceed to have Winthorpe arrested and to be placed in a compromising position in front of his girlfriend. So all he has to rely on is the hooker who was hired to ruin him.

Critics Consensus

Much darker and more sensitive than the sequels it spawned, First Blood is a thrilling survival adventure that takes full advantage of Sylvester Stallone’s acting skills

Audience Consensus

First Blood is the ultimate action movie that will make you want to scream “Adrian!” at the top of your lungs. Stallone’s portrayal of John Rambo is both intense and vulnerable, making him the perfect hero to root for as he takes on the establishment. And let’s not forget those iconic one-liners that will have you quoting the movie for days. Sure, it’s preposterous and bloody, but that’s what makes it so much fun. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Storyline

John J. Rambo is a former United States Special Forces soldier who fought in Vietnam and won the Congressional Medal of Honor, but his time in Vietnam still haunts him. As he came to Hope, Washington to visit a friend, he was guided out of town by the Sheriff William Teasel who insults Rambo, but what Teasel does not know that his insult angered Rambo to the point where Rambo became violent and was arrested. As he was at the county jail being cleaned, he escapes and goes on a rampage through the forest to try to escape from the sheriffs who want to kill him. Then, as Rambo’s commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman tries to save both the Sheriff’s department and Rambo before the situation gets out of hand.

FIRST BLOOD

Stallone brought intense physicality, obviously, but also hangdog vulnerability to a character who takes revenge on a cruel, unfeeling establishment and utters some of the most iconic lines in shoot’em’up history.
