The King of Laughter (2022)
RT Audience Score:
Awards & Nominations: NA
The King of Laughter is a film that is both technically brilliant and thematically ambitious, exploring the life of Eduardo Scarpetta, a beloved Neapolitan actor and playwright. While the film commits to its driving conceit of Scarpetta’s wild personal life, it also manages to conjure up the atmosphere of the era with impeccable period detail. However, the dialogue can feel mannered at times, and Scarpetta’s actions can be so pompous and selfish that they become irritating. Nevertheless, the film is a dazzling feat, the work of an experienced and passionate director who manages to balance the comedic and dramatic elements of Scarpetta’s life with skill and nuance. Overall, The King of Laughter is a must-see for fans of biopic-comedies and period dramas alike.
The King of Laughter” is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and wonder how one man could be so dedicated to both theater and making babies out of wedlock. The director did an amazing job of bringing Eduardo Scarpetta’s life to the big screen, and the period details were spot on. Sure, Scarpetta’s actions could be a bit irritating at times, but that’s just part of his charm. Overall, this movie is a must-see for anyone who loves a good biopic-comedy and wants to learn more about the man who was truly the king of laughter.

Figuring out the exact nature of all their relationships has a certain fascination, but it’s not exactly entertaining. The dialogue feels mannered and Scarpetta’s actions are so selfish and pompous they become irritating.

Some Kind of Heaven (2021)
RT Audience Score: 74%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 10 nominations
Some Kind of Heaven could have gone deeper into its subject, but it remains a breezily entertaining look at some interesting people
Some Kind of Heaven is like a real-life version of The Good Place, but with a lot more wrinkles and golf carts. This documentary takes us inside America’s largest retirement community, where the residents are searching for their own version of paradise. From synchronized swimming to speed dating, the film captures the strange and often hilarious ways that people try to find meaning in their golden years. And while the setting may seem idyllic, the film doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of aging, like loneliness and loss. Overall, Some Kind of Heaven is a fascinating and entertaining look at what happens when the American Dream meets the reality of getting old.

Days (Rizi) (2021)
RT Audience Score: 71%

Tsai Ming-liang’s Days is a cinematic masterpiece that transcends language and relies on the power of visual storytelling to convey its emotional depth. The film’s minimalist approach, devoid of dialogue and subtitles, immerses the viewer in a world of raw human connection and longing. Ming-liang’s ability to collapse the boundaries between the real and the fictional, the corporeal and the spiritual, creates a vision of grace that is both haunting and beautiful. While it may not be an easy sit, committing to Days’ earthy dream logic is a rewarding experience that lingers long after the credits roll. This film is a testament to the power of cinema and a must-see for any true cinephile.
If you’re looking for a movie that’s a little different, a little artsy, and a lot of beautiful, then Days is the film for you. Sure, there’s not a lot of dialogue, but who needs words when you have stunning visuals and a story that speaks to the human need for connection? Plus, it’s got that slow cinema vibe that’s perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Just be prepared to commit to the dream logic and let yourself get lost in the experience. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Stray takes a patient, meditative look at the lives of Istanbul’s stray dog population — and uncovers truths of the human condition in the process
Stray is like a dog’s version of a reality show, but with a lot more heart and a lot less drama. It’s a beautiful and immersive look into the lives of Istanbul’s street dogs, and it’s hard not to fall in love with each and every one of them. From bone-chewing to butt-sniffing, this documentary captures the essence of what it means to be a dog, and it does so with a delicate touch that’s both compassionate and contemplative. So if you’re a dog lover, or just looking for a film that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, Stray is definitely worth a watch.

Farewell Amor (2020)
RT Audience Score: 71%
Awards & Nominations: 9 wins & 8 nominations
A striking debut feature for writer-director Ekwa Msangi, Farewell Amor movingly captures the fallout from a long-separated family’s reunion
Farewell Amor is like that one friend who always surprises you with their hidden talents. At first, you think it’s just another immigrant story, but then it hits you with its unique perspective and split narrative. The performances are top-notch, and the cinematography captures the intimacy of the story beautifully. Sure, it may be a bit slow at times, but it’s worth it to see where this family’s desires and truths collide. Overall, Farewell Amor is a promising debut from Ekwa Msangi, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

A striking debut for writer-director Kim Bora, House of Hummingbird delicately captures a turning point in one young woman’s life
House of Hummingbird is a coming-of-age drama that will make you feel like you’re in a contemplative midsummer lassitude. The film takes its time getting where it’s going, but the journey is worth it. It’s a slow-moving but exquisitely drawn character study that captures the dilemmas of adolescence with a certain compositional sobriety. The young lead actress Ji-hu Park delivers a touching and true performance that will stay with you for a long time. If you’re looking for a film that’s both brutal and achingly hopeful, House of Hummingbird is the one for you.

The music is fantastic and the story is both heartbreaking and uplifting. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves great acting and powerful storytelling. Plot
Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (Academy Award® winner Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman) – who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry – spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives. Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let society’s prejudices dictate their worth. Directed by George C. Wolfe and adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Fences Oscar® nominees Denzel Washington and Todd Black. Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige and Dusan Brown co-star alongside Grammy® winner Branford Marsalis’ score.
