24 City (Er shi si cheng ji) (2008)
RT Audience Score: 76%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 6 nominations
One of China’s most talented directors blurs the lines between non-fiction, drama, and musical theater in this vivid portrait of a country in cultural flux
24 City is a documentary/fiction hybrid that takes a look at the changing fortunes of a defunct aeronautic factory and its workers. Through interviews with retired workers and faux interviews with scripted characters, the film brings long-repressed history to life on an intimate scale. While some critics found the film confusing and lacking in social and historical perspective, others praised its poetic film language and emotional impact. Overall, 24 City is a fascinating and bittersweet film that offers a fond, quietly ironic look at the past and the present facing the global problem of individual obsolescence and urban uprooting. Plus, who doesn’t love a good documentary/fiction hybrid?

Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic
District 9 is like if E.T. was a gritty, action-packed thriller with a side of social commentary. The aliens, or “prawns,” are both terrifying and oddly sympathetic, and the film’s exploration of xenophobia and oppression is both timely and thought-provoking. Plus, there’s plenty of explosions and vaporizations to keep you on the edge of your seat. Overall, District 9 is a must-watch for sci-fi fans and anyone who wants to see aliens kick some serious butt.

Plot
In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed “The Prawns,” appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new ‘Prawn’ friends.

Plot
Czechoslovakia, 1963. Jan Díte is released from prison after serving 15 years. He goes into semi exile in a deserted village near the German border. In flashbacks, he tells his story: he’s a small, clever and quick-witted young man, stubbornly naïve, a vendor at a train station. Thanks to a patron, he becomes a waiter at upscale hotels and restaurants. We see him discover how the wealthy tick and how to please women. He strives to be a millionaire with his own hotel. Before the war, he meets Líza, a German woman in Prague. Is this his ticket to wealth or his undoing? Meanwhile, we see Jan putting a life together after prison: why was he sentenced, and who will he become?

In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2008)
RT Audience Score: 79%
Awards & Nominations: 4 wins
Funny, quirky, and bittersweet, In Search of a Midnight Kiss is a romantic comedy with a heart and a brain — and stands as a sharp debut for director Alex Holdridge
In Search of a Midnight Kiss is like a New Year’s Eve party, but without the awkward small talk and the pressure to find someone to kiss at midnight. It’s a sweet and funny indie movie that will make you fall in love with the characters and their journey to find love. Sure, it may not be the most original movie out there, but it’s definitely worth watching if you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy that’s not too cheesy. Plus, it’s a great reminder that sometimes the best things in life happen when you least expect them.

Plot
On New Year’s Eve, Wilson, a twenty-nine-year old guy has just had the worst year of his life. He emigrated to Los Angeles, has no date, no concrete plans and every intention of locking the doors and forgetting the last year ever happened. That is until his best friend, Jacob, browbeats him into posting a personal ad on Craig’s List. When Vivian, a strong-willed woman hell bent on being with the right guy at the stroke of midnight responds, a chaotic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching journey through the black and white streets of L.A. begins. In the waning hours of the year, emotional vulnerability and bitterly honest humor seem to be waiting around every corner.

A calm documentary that doesn’t resort to shrill polemics, The Unforeseen also benefits from great interview subjects and jaw-dropping cinematography
The Unforeseen is a stunning documentary that explores the consequences of urban sprawl in Austin, Texas. With beautiful cinematography and an even-handed approach, the film presents a powerful message about the importance of preserving our environment. While it may lack a bit of focus at times, The Unforeseen is a must-see for anyone who cares about the future of our planet. Plus, who doesn’t love a good parable about environmentalists vs. real estate developers? It’s like David vs. Goliath, but with more trees.

Unapologetically political, this intimate and heart wrenching profile of an Iraq veteran may be rough around the edges but takes a potent stance with determination and compassion
Body of War is a documentary that will make you laugh, cry, and want to punch a wall all at the same time. It tells the story of Tomas Young, a veteran who was paralyzed from the chest down after serving in Iraq. The film does a great job of showing the struggles that Tomas faces on a daily basis, but also highlights his incredible strength and resilience. While some critics may say that the film is too simple-minded in its argument against the war, I think it’s important to remember that sometimes the simplest messages are the most powerful. Overall, Body of War is a must-see for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the human cost of war.

The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias) (2006)
RT Audience Score: 82%
Awards & Nominations: 32 wins & 38 nominations
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation is a delightful Brazilian coming-of-age drama that captures the essence of growing up in a politically charged environment. Director Cao Hamburger’s light touch and the film’s authenticity make it a truly beautiful experience. While some may find it a bit slow, the wait is definitely worthwhile as the film builds towards a satisfying climax. The film’s portrayal of São Paolo’s Jewish neighborhood in the 1970s is both lovely and insightful, and the unfamiliar setting adds a fresh perspective to a familiar story. Overall, this film is a charming and poignant exploration of innocence, activism, and the complexities of family.
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation” is a coming-of-age film that takes place in 1970s São Paolo, Brazil. Critics have mixed opinions on the film, with some praising its authenticity and charm, while others find it to be a bit too sentimental. However, as a casual moviegoer, I found the film to be a fun and heartwarming look at a young boy’s journey to find his place in the world. The film’s setting in a Jewish community adds a unique perspective to the story, and the performances from the young cast are impressive. Overall, “The Year My Parents Went on Vacation” is a delightful film that will leave you feeling nostalgic for a time and place you may have never experienced.

A coming-of-age drama entwined with a political statement, In Bloom underscores its well-worn themes with strong performances and palpable real-world tension
In Bloom is like a coming-of-age story, but with a lot more drama and a lot less Zac Efron. The two lead actresses, Lika Babluani and Mariam Bokeria, are the real deal and carry the film with their performances. The movie is set in Georgia (the country, not the state) and it’s like a glimpse into a society that’s not too far from the Middle Ages. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something a little heavier. Just don’t expect to leave the movie feeling like you can conquer the world.

Directors Nana Ekvtimshvili and Simon Gross adopt the long, contemplative takes of the new wave; much of the film feels familiar, but the location shooting and period details are nicely drawn, a result of Ekvtimshvili’s autobiographical script.

This is a story of adolescence and female friendship under pressure, explored with a quietly engrossing combination of familiarity and strangeness.

Babluani and Bokeria are completely believable as the two teenagers who have to grow up very quickly, and a long, uninterrupted scene in which the former dances, alone, at her friend’s wedding is a highlight of an extremely engaging movie.

This film out of Georgia (the country, not the state) depicts a society not far removed from anarchy, or the Middle Ages, for that matter. There’s not much light or laughter in this grim tale of limited choices.

The performances are naturalistic and severe, especially the highly volatile families, where shouting matches are almost traumatising to hear and to watch. But … the film ends without having said enough to satisfy us
