Divine Intervention (2003)
RT Audience Score: 78%
Awards & Nominations: 6 wins & 2 nominations
Suleiman utilizes absurdist humor to craft a provocative, original film
Divine Intervention is a film that’s both hilarious and terrifying, making it the perfect antidote to the chaos of the world. While the visual puns and sight gags may not have you rolling on the floor laughing, they’ll definitely get you thinking and debating. Elia Suleiman’s sharp observations of life in the Arab-Israeli region are both surreal and valid, and the film’s non-narrative style mixes agitprop with Pythonesque silliness. It’s like Buster Keaton meets Monty Python in the Middle East, and it’s a must-see for anyone who wants to laugh, think, and be entertained all at once.

The Hours is a movie that will make you feel like you’re in a literature class, but in a good way. It’s like watching a book come to life, and you’ll be so moved that you’ll want to read the book afterwards. Plus, it’s got a killer cast and a beautiful score. In 1951, Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), a pregnant housewife, is planning a party for her husband, but she can’t stop reading the novel “Mrs. Dalloway”. Plot
This is the story of Ana, a first generation Mexican-American teenager on the verge of becoming a woman. She lives in the predominately Latino community of East Los Angeles. Freshly graduated from high school, Ana receives a full scholarship to Columbia University. Her very traditional, old-world parents feel that now is the time for Ana to help provide for the family, not the time for college. Torn between her mainstream ambitions and her cultural heritage she agrees to work with her mother at her sister’s downtown LA sewing factory. Over the summer she learns to admire the hardworking team of women who teach her solidarity and teamwork. Still at odds with what her mother expects of her, Ana realizes that leaving home to continue her education is essential to finding her place proudly in the world as an American and Chicana.

Plot
Seventeen year old Jason Slocumb, Jr. – Igby to most that know him – comes from east coast old money, the second son of self-absorbed and controlling Mimi Slocumb and medically-diagnosed schizophrenic Jason Slocum, Sr., the latter who has for several years been institutionalized in a Maryland psychiatric facility. While Igby’s economics-studying Columbia-attending older brother Ollie Slocum has embraced and aspires to continue their wealthy life, Igby has rebelled against it, considering his brother a fascist (although he could soften that label to Republican). Because of Jason’s situation, Mimi has largely left the role of male role model for Ollie and Igby to their godfather, D.H. Banes. Igby’s rebellion has led to him being kicked out of one prep school after another, the latest, a military academy, from which Igby escapes before he can graduate. As such, Mimi and D.H. arrange for Igby to live in New York with Ollie for the summer while working for D.H. renovating some of his properties, before Mimi arranges for yet another strict school for the fall so that Igby can at least graduate. Igby is largely able to hide out for most of the summer with the help of Rachel, D.H.’s younger heroin addict mistress, and Sookie, a slightly older waitress with who he falls in love. An issue with Sookie and the aftermath of a joint mission with Ollie leads to Igby having a clearer picture of what his immediate future will look like.

I’m Going Home (2001)
RT Audience Score: 68%
Awards & Nominations: 5 wins & 5 nominations
Manoel de Oliveira’s “I’m Going Home” is a cinematic masterpiece that captures the essence of daily life and the power of images to preserve it. The film is an unsentimental meditation on the ambiguous present, on aimlessness, isolation, and infirmity, which is a rarity in films about old age. The elliptical yet perceptive storytelling style of the film is stylistically adventurous and subtly powerful. Michel Piccoli’s performance as the protagonist is the film’s beating heart, and the realistic look at the ways in which mortality plays into the conscious and subconscious plans of the living is poignant. It’s a minor film with major pleasures that touches on greatness, and there’s something remarkable about an artist of 90-plus years taking the effort to share his impressions of life and loss and time and art with us.
I’m Going Home” is a film that’s like a fine wine – it gets better with age. And speaking of age, the director, Oliveira, was in his nineties when he made this movie. Can you believe it? The film is a meditation on life, death, and everything in between. It’s not a celebration of youth or a lament of old age, but rather a realistic look at the human experience. The performances are top-notch, especially Michel Piccoli’s, who is the heart of the film. Overall, “I’m Going Home” is a quiet masterpiece that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll.

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002)
RT Audience Score: 79%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins
The inter-cutting of animation by Spawn’s creator, Todd McFarlane, doesn’t always work, but the performances by the young actors capture the pains of growing up well
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys” is a coming-of-age movie that follows a group of mischievous boys who attend a Catholic school. While some critics found the film to be too cliched and slow-moving, others praised the performances of the young actors and the inventive animated sequences by Todd McFarlane. Personally, I thought the movie was devious, delinquent, and diverting – just like the boys themselves. Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance as a priest was a highlight, but overall, the film was a fairly formulaic tale that was saved by the passion of its makers and players. If you’re looking for a serious and profound movie, this might not be it, but if you want to relive the rebellious days of your youth, “The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys” is worth a watch.

In the year 2054 A.D. crime is virtually eliminated from Washington D.C. thanks to an elite law enforcing squad “Precrime”. They use three gifted humans (called “Pre-Cogs”) with special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton heads Precrime and believes the system’s flawlessness steadfastly. However one day the Pre-Cogs predict that Anderton will commit a murder himself in the next 36 hours. Worse, Anderton doesn’t even know the victim. He decides to get to the mystery’s core by finding out the ‘minority report’ which means the prediction of the female Pre-Cog Agatha that “might” tell a different story and prove Anderton innocent.

Faithful to the comics and filled with action, X-Men brings a crowded slate of classic Marvel characters to the screen with a talented ensemble cast and surprisingly sharp narrative focus

Michael Douglas gives the best perfromance of his career (to be remembered at Oscar time) in this screwball comedy about a college professor who’s pushed into maturity by forces beyond his control; a well-acted coming-of-age saga for adults.

Wonder Boys reminds us that life is about putting one sentence after another, knowing when to start the next chapter, and realizing when it’s time to discard your progress altogether and start something new.

The ARTery
Like a favorite novel, “Wonder Boys” gets more comfortably broken-in with each return, and Michael Douglas wears Grady Tripp’s scruffiness as sharply as he does Gordon Gekko’s natty clothes – addressing jealousy, panic and terror in creative complacency.
