Colette (2018)
RT Audience Score: 69%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 11 nominations
Formally familiar but a brilliant match for its lead, Colette is a thoroughly entertaining biopic and an overdue testament to Keira Knightley’s underrated gifts
Colette is a must-see movie for anyone who loves a good period drama with a feminist twist. Keira Knightley shines as the titular character, bringing to life the story of a woman who defied societal norms and revolutionized the world of literature. The film’s lush settings and stunning costumes transport you to turn-of-the-century France, while the strong performances from the entire cast keep you engaged from start to finish. Plus, who doesn’t love a good same-sex affair tastefully portrayed on screen? Overall, Colette is a triumph and a reminder that women have been breaking barriers and changing the world for centuries.

Plot
After marrying successful Parisian writer Henry Gauthier-Villars, known commonly as “Willy” (Dominic West), Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. Colette, in turn, pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette’s fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.

Awards & Nominations: 13 wins & 43 nominations
Mandy’s gonzo violence is fueled by a gripping performance by Nicolas Cage — and anchored with palpable emotion conveyed between his volcanic outbursts
Mandy is a wild ride that’s not for the faint of heart. It’s a heavy metal fever dream that’s equal parts beautiful and brutal. The film’s second half is where it really shines, but you’ll have to sit through a slow burn first. Nicolas Cage gives a performance that’s both hilarious and terrifying, and the long take rage scene in his underwear is something you won’t soon forget. Overall, Mandy is a bloody, nasty, and entertaining experience that’s perfect for gorehounds and fans of genre cinema. Just don’t expect a straightforward plot or deeply felt emotions.

Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits
Hereditary is the kind of movie that will make you want to sleep with the lights on for a week. Toni Collette’s performance is so good, it’s scary. And speaking of scary, the cinematography and score are so ominous, you’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting for the ultimate evil reveal. Dark Money does an impressive job of tackling a complicated subject in easily understandable — and, for many viewers, utterly enraging — terms
Dark Money” is the kind of documentary that will make you want to throw your popcorn at the screen and scream, “What the heck?!” It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from anger to distress to regret. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom. Director Kimberly Reed manages to inject some fun into the film, making it an enjoyable watch despite the heavy subject matter. And the best part? It offers solutions to the problem, so you won’t leave feeling completely hopeless. So grab some popcorn (but maybe keep it in the bowl this time) and settle in for a powerful and informative documentary.

Private Life uses one couple’s bumpy journey to take an affecting look at an easily identifiable – and too rarely dramatized – rite of adult passage
Private Life is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and question your own life choices all at once. Tamara Jenkins has created a masterpiece that explores the complexities of family, relationships, and the pursuit of parenthood. The performances by the cast are nothing short of brilliant, with Kayli Carter stealing the show as Sadie. The film is filled with hilarious moments that will have you rolling on the floor, but also has a poignant message about the sacrifices we make for the ones we love. Overall, Private Life is a must-watch for anyone who has ever struggled with the idea of starting a family.

Plot
In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

Plot
Menashe, a widower, lives and works within the Hasidic community of Borough Park, Brooklyn. Since his wife passed away a year before, he has been trying hard to regain custody of his nine-year-old son, Rieven. But the rabbi (and all the community behind him) will not hear of it unless he re-marries, which Menashe does not want, his first marriage having been very unhappy. Father and son get on well together, but can Menashe take care of Rieven properly? Not really for all his goodwill as he holds down a low-paid job as a grocery clerk that consumes too much of his efforts and energy. Always late, always in a hurry, he endeavors to improve himself though. But will his efforts be enough to convince the rabbi that he can be a good father without a wife at home?

Shin Godzilla (2016)
RT Audience Score: 75%

Shin Godzilla, the latest addition to the iconic franchise, is a visually impressive and well-directed film that takes aim at the bureaucratic inefficiencies of the Japanese government. While some critics found the dialogue-heavy scenes to be a bit slow, others praised the shrewd and amusing portrayal of Japan’s bickering bureaucracy. The film’s final shot is haunting and will surely leave a lasting impression on viewers. With its unique twist on the classic formula and its Dunkirk-like intensity, Shin Godzilla is a must-see for fans of the genre.
Shin Godzilla is like a wild ride on a rollercoaster, but instead of loops and drops, you get bureaucratic red tape and government meetings. But don’t let that scare you off, because once Godzilla shows up, it’s a monster mash of epic proportions. The special effects may not be top-notch, but the final shot will leave you with goosebumps. Plus, it’s always fun to see Godzilla wreak havoc in his true home of Japan. Overall, Shin Godzilla is a must-watch for any kaiju fan looking for a good time.

Awards & Nominations: 4 wins & 14 nominations
Of a piece with much of director Laurie Anderson’s idiosyncratic output, Heart of a Dog delves into weighty themes with lyrical, haunting grace
Heart of a Dog is a movie that’s as unique as it is charming. It’s not every day that you get to watch a film that cites philosophers, painters, and Jewish grandmothers while also featuring a terrier as the main character. But somehow, director Laurie Anderson pulls it off. The film is a mix of reminiscence and fantasy that’s both honest and calming. It’s a daring and moving experience that’s worth watching, even if you’re not an experimental cinema fan. Plus, who doesn’t love a good dog movie?

Like much of Anderson’s work, Heart of a Dog takes the form of casually constructed, almost meandering reminiscences, while at the same time never losing its tightly structured focus and drive.

An unclassifiable but strangely charming combination of reminiscence and fantasy, this is worth seeking out not only for Anderson fans but also for anyone interested in experimental cinema.

Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein and 9/11 are all thrown into the mix with a lightness of touch at once ephemeral and profound.

Nothing if not original, this is almost certainly the only movie about a terrier that cites the writing of Wittgenstein and Kierkegaard, the painting of Goya and the wisdom of Jewish grandmothers.

Heart of a Dog is a triumph and not simply in its love and candor, but in its calming ease that gently reminds viewers: no matter what, everything will be OK.

Anderson is auteur, narrator, and guide, grasping our hands and settling us into her vast and gorgeous mind-scape through seamlessly-mixed media and an astonishingly enveloping sound design…

This film’s disjointed structure and emotional reticence would make a better album than a movie. An album also doesn’t demand an engaging overall story to hold our attention, but many of the scenes in this fairly short film had me nodding off.
